Mariners appoint Jason Kanzler as manager despite lack of experience

The Seattle Mariners have named Jason Kanzler as their new manager, giving the 36-year-old his first managerial role despite having no experience in the position at any level. The Chicago Cubs’ director of player development will take over after Dan Wilson was dismissed following a disappointing 2026 season.

Kanzler becomes the second-youngest manager in Major League Baseball, with only Washington Nationals manager Blake Butera, who is 34, younger than him. Seattle is hoping that his background in player development and his previous work with major-league coaching staffs can help the team return to championship contention.

Jason Kanzler takes over as Mariners manager

The Mariners confirmed Kanzler’s appointment on Tuesday, ending their search for Wilson’s replacement. President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto explained that the club was looking for someone capable of pushing everyone within the organisation to improve.

“Our goal in this process was finding a manager with the ability to challenge all of us to improve,” Dipoto said. He also pointed to Kanzler’s mindset, expertise, communication skills, and intensity, believing those qualities could help establish a championship standard in Seattle.

Kanzler will be taking on his first managerial assignment, making the appointment an unusual decision for a club with ambitions of competing at the highest level. Nevertheless, the Mariners are convinced that his background and approach make him the right person to lead the team.

The new manager also expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunity, highlighting the quality already present within the squad.

“I am thrilled to join the Mariners organization and I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running,” Kanzler said. He added that he and his coaching staff were eager to unlock the team’s potential.

No managerial experience but an MLB coaching background

Although Kanzler has never managed a team, he is not completely new to working in a major-league environment. He joined the Houston Astros’ coaching staff in 2022 and served as their assistant hitting coach the following year, having previously worked within the organisation’s farm system.

His next move came in 2024, when the Chicago Cubs appointed him director of player development. He held that position until receiving the opportunity to take charge of Seattle.

Kanzler’s appointment is particularly notable because managerial candidates without previous experience at any level rarely receive opportunities at major-league clubs. However, there is a prominent example of such a decision working out.

The New York Yankees hired Aaron Boone directly from the broadcasting booth in 2018, despite his lack of managerial or coaching experience. Boone has subsequently guided the club to the postseason in eight of his nine seasons in charge.

Former Astros manager Joe Espada was reportedly the other finalist for the Mariners position, but Seattle ultimately opted for Kanzler.

Mariners looking to recover from the disappointing 2026 season

The managerial change follows a significant setback for Seattle, who finished the 2026 campaign with a 76-86 record and ended up five games behind in the AL West.

The result represented a considerable disappointment after the Mariners came close to reaching the World Series a year earlier. They made it to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series and were just five outs away from securing the first World Series appearance in franchise history.

Expectations were consequently high heading into 2026, with Seattle widely considered a potential World Series contender. Instead, the team struggled to meet those expectations, with underperforming hitters among the main reasons for its disappointing campaign.

Kanzler now faces the challenge of getting more out of a talented roster and helping the Mariners return to the level they reached during their previous postseason run.

Third manager under Jerry Dipoto

Kanzler will become Seattle’s third manager since Dipoto took charge of baseball operations in September 2015.

Scott Servais was the first, holding the position from 2015 until 2024. Wilson then took over and remained in charge through 2026 before being dismissed following the team’s disappointing season.

The Mariners are now placing their faith in a relatively inexperienced candidate, hoping Kanzler can turn his background in player development and major-league coaching into success in his first managerial role.
