Guardians hit by injury setbacks as Ramírez leads trio sidelined

The Cleveland Guardians will be without third baseman José Ramírez for an extended period after he underwent a procedure on Tuesday to remove the hook of his fractured left hamate bone. According to the team, the recovery timeline is expected to range between five and seven weeks.

The injury adds to a rare stretch of missed time for Ramírez, who has typically been a durable presence throughout his career. Since 2016, he has played at least 152 games in eight separate seasons, and across his 14 years in the league, he has only twice been placed on the injured list. One of those earlier absences also involved a hamate bone issue, though it occurred in his right hand in 2019.

Before this setback, Ramírez had featured in 72 games this season, producing 10 home runs, 33 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, and a .757 OPS.

Martínez and DeLauter also sidelined

The Guardians have also lost outfielder Ángel Martínez, who was placed on the 10-day injured list after sustaining a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. His season line stands at .239/.276/.442, along with 11 home runs, 33 RBIs, and nine stolen bases across 66 appearances.

Rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter is dealing with a separate issue, as he remains day-to-day while attempting to play through a small fracture in his right rib. His status is being monitored on a game-by-game basis.

All three injuries occurred during Saturday’s 3–1 win over the Detroit Tigers, where Ramírez, Martínez, and DeLauter occupied the first three positions in the batting order.

Lineup disruption and playoff positioning

The simultaneous absences remove three key contributors from Cleveland’s roster at once, creating a significant reshuffle at the top of the lineup. Each of the injured players had been central to the team’s offensive structure during the season.

Despite these setbacks, the Guardians enter Tuesday with a 39–33 record and hold the second American League wild-card position.

The team now faces the challenge of maintaining its standing while navigating the loss of multiple regular starters for an uncertain stretch.
