American League dominates 2026 All-Star Game with historic pitching performance

The American League produced a memorable performance in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, defeating the National League 4-0 in Philadelphia. The victory extended the AL’s advantage in the all-time All-Star Game record to 49-45-2, but the biggest story of the night was a dominant pitching display that kept the NL off the scoreboard.

The AL became just the 10th team in All-Star Game history to record a shutout, with the previous American League shutout coming in 2013 at Citi Field, when the AL won 3-0. The pitching staff also limited the National League to only three hits, all singles, matching the second-lowest hit total ever allowed in the Midsummer Classic.

American League pitchers struck out 15 batters, falling just one short of the record for a nine-inning All-Star Game. The AL set that mark in 2019 with 16 strikeouts, while the highest total overall came in longer games when both teams reached 17 strikeouts in 2008 and the NL did the same in 1967.

Starting pitcher Dylan Cease immediately set the tone for the American League. The right-hander struck out three of the four batters he faced in the opening inning, becoming the first pitcher since Brad Penny in 2006 to achieve that feat in the first frame of an All-Star Game. He joined an exclusive group that also includes Pedro Martínez, Dave Stieb, Jim Palmer, Warren Spahn, and Carl Hubbell.

Yankees duo provides early offensive spark

While the pitchers controlled the game, the AL hitters gave their team an early cushion in the first inning. Yankees teammates Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice combined to produce the opening runs, creating the only offense the American League needed in the 4-0 triumph.

Bellinger delivered the first blow with a two-run single against Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez, before Rice followed with another RBI single one batter later. Their performances made them the first Yankees teammates to both collect RBIs in an All-Star Game since Roger Maris and Tom Tresh accomplished the feat in 1962.

The pair also became the first teammates overall to achieve that milestone since Arizona’s Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll did so in 2025. Before Bellinger and Rice, the most recent American League teammates with All-Star Game RBIs were Toronto’s Marcus Semien and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2021.

The two Yankees stars joined a select list of players from the franchise who have recorded RBIs in the All-Star Game. Previous Yankees combinations include Joe DiMaggio and Vic Raschi in 1948, Joe Gordon and Charlie Keller in 1946, and the famous 1937 trio of Bill Dickey, Lou Gehrig, and Red Rolfe.

Wrobleski celebrates birthday with special performance

National League pitcher Justin Wrobleski had a memorable appearance on his 26th birthday, delivering one of the standout individual performances despite the team’s defeat.

The Dodgers left-hander entered in relief and dominated the seventh inning, striking out all three hitters he faced. Travis Bazzana, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Yandy Díaz were all retired via swinging strikeouts, giving Wrobleski a perfect start.

He returned for the eighth inning and allowed a solo home run to White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas but still added two more strikeouts to his total. With five strikeouts in the game, Wrobleski became the first pitcher since Pedro Martínez in 1999 to reach that mark in a single All-Star Game.

Before Wrobleski, 43 pitchers had worked two innings in a Midsummer Classic, with Corbin Burnes being the latest to do so in 2021, but none had recorded five strikeouts. Wrobleski also became the 10th player to appear in an All-Star Game on his birthday.

Bellinger earns MVP award as Vargas makes history

Cody Bellinger’s strong start to the game earned him the 2026 All-Star Game MVP award. He became the fourth Yankees player to receive the honor since it was introduced in 1962, joining Giancarlo Stanton, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter.

The award added another achievement to Bellinger’s career résumé, which already includes the 2017 NL Rookie of the Year Award, the 2018 NLCS MVP Award, and the 2019 NL MVP Award. He could potentially appear in another All-Star Game on his birthday in 2027, when the event is scheduled for July 13 at Wrigley Field.

Miguel Vargas also created his own piece of history during the game. The White Sox infielder, enjoying a breakout season that earned him his first All-Star selection, launched a 433-foot home run off Wrobleski in the eighth inning to extend the AL’s lead.

The blast made Vargas just the third White Sox player to hit an All-Star Game home run, following Magglio Ordoñez in 2001 and Frank Thomas in 1995. His 433-foot shot was also tied for the third-longest All-Star Game home run since Statcast began tracking in 2015, behind only Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 468-foot homer in 2021 and Giancarlo Stanton’s 457-foot drive in 2022.

The home run also added another connection between Vargas and Wrobleski. Vargas began his career as a Dodgers prospect and spent parts of three seasons in Los Angeles before being traded at the 2024 Deadline in a deal that brought Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech to the Dodgers. Wrobleski made his MLB debut about a month before that trade, with Vargas playing left field behind him.
