Wirtz inspires Germany to a dramatic win over Switzerland

Germany extended their winning streak to six matches with a thrilling victory in Basel, driven largely by the outstanding performance of Florian Wirtz. Despite the eventual success, the visitors showed vulnerability in defense early on and fell behind in the 17th minute when Dan Ndoye cut inside from the left and fired past Oliver Baumann from a narrow angle.

The response came swiftly, as Germany equalized nine minutes later through Jonathan Tah, who met Wirtz’s cross with a header. However, Switzerland regained the advantage before the break when Breel Embolo capitalized on hesitation from Baumann, diving to head home in the 41st minute.

Wirtz once again proved decisive just before halftime, delivering a precise lofted pass that split the defense and allowed Serge Gnabry to lift the ball over Gregor Kobel. This sequence ensured the teams went into the interval level after an eventful opening period.

Wirtz takes control after the break

The second half saw Wirtz elevate his influence even further. Eleven minutes after the restart, he produced the standout moment of the match, striking a powerful right-footed effort from 30 meters that flew over Kobel and into the top corner, putting Germany ahead 3-2.

Switzerland continued to respond and found another equalizer ten minutes from full time when Joel Monteiro unleashed a strong shot beyond Baumann. The contest remained finely balanced, with both sides trading blows in an open and intense encounter.

In the closing stages, Wirtz delivered once more, scoring from the edge of the penalty area with another high-quality finish six minutes before the end. His decisive contribution secured a 4-3 victory for Germany in a match filled with momentum swings.

Result ends Swiss unbeaten run

The outcome not only maintained Germany’s impressive sequence of wins but also brought an end to Switzerland’s ten-game unbeaten streak. The hosts had shown resilience throughout, repeatedly finding ways back into the match, but ultimately could not contain Wirtz’s influence.

Germany’s attacking play, particularly through Wirtz, proved to be the difference in a game where defensive frailties were evident on both sides. His involvement in multiple goals underlined his importance in turning the match in Germany’s favor.

For Switzerland, the defeat marked a disappointing conclusion to a strong run of results, while Germany left Basel with renewed confidence following another high-scoring success.
