Wales secure 2-1 Nations League comeback victory over Norway

Wales brought an end to their six-game streak without a victory in striking style, fighting back from a goal down to defeat a 10-man Norway side 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium. The win provided Craig Bellamy’s team with a vital boost and marked their first triumph over a higher-ranked opponent since he assumed the role in 2024.

Norway took an early lead courtesy of Oscar Bobb, but Wales levelled before the interval through Dan James. Torbjorn Heggem’s sending off in the second half shifted the momentum, and Neco Williams netted from a well-worked free-kick to seal the comeback.

Wales equalise before the break

Norway began the match with more purpose and required only their first genuine attacking move to break the deadlock. Oscar Bobb linked up with Martin Odegaard before sprinting past a stationary Welsh backline to collect his captain’s return ball, guiding it beyond Danny Ward into the near corner.

Wales might have crumbled after conceding, especially considering their poor recent form. Instead, Bellamy’s men responded with determination and started to apply consistent pressure on Norway, with Sorba Thomas proving troublesome on the left flank.

The equaliser came seven minutes before the interval when Liam Cullen cut out a Fredrik Aursnes pass. Lewis Koumas spread the ball to Thomas, who set up Dan James for his 11th goal at international level.

Norway down to 10 men following Heggem’s red card

Wales were handed another significant advantage shortly after the restart when Norway defender Torbjorn Heggem was dismissed. After misjudging a long ball forward from Ben Davies, he seized James around the arms and pulled the Wales winger to the ground close to the penalty box.

Neco Williams punished Norway almost instantly. The Wales defender delivered a precise free-kick that caught Orjan Nyland off guard, with the ball bending inside the goalkeeper’s right-hand upright.

Nyland might have reacted better, but Wales had built momentum and kept posing a threat. Josh Sheehan and Mark Harris both came close after being introduced, only to be thwarted by the Norway shot-stopper.

Norway eventually committed players forward in pursuit of an equaliser, but Wales’ defensive resilience held strong as the visitors found it difficult to carve out clear chances.

Haaland kept quiet as Wales see out the win

Erling Haaland experienced a frustrating night in Cardiff. The Norway forward had netted 65 goals in 57 international appearances before the match, but Wales mostly kept him away from threatening areas.

His sole genuine opportunity arrived nine minutes from the end when he climbed to meet a Marcus Pedersen cross. However, his header was directed straight at Ward, who gathered it without trouble.

Jorgen Strand Larsen then blazed over late on, but Wales withstood the final spell of pressure to claim an important victory.

Wales relieve pressure before Denmark clash

The result brought an end to a tough period for Wales, who had gone six international matches without a win. It was also their first victory over a higher-ranked team since Bellamy took over and their first Nations League A win at the ninth time of asking.

Wales stay bottom of League A Group 4 at the halfway point, but the display provided encouragement following a challenging stretch that had seen them lose eight of their previous 13 internationals. They had also been missing several key players, including Karl Darlow, Dylan Lawlor, Joe Rodon, David Brooks, and Harry Wilson.

The win was especially meaningful given that Norway came into the match ranked 18th in the world, 20 positions above Wales. Bellamy’s side demonstrated character after Bobb’s early strike and produced sufficient quality to earn a result that could help shift the mood surrounding the team.

It was also Wales’ first home fixture since Bellamy held discussions about a potential move to Burnley during the summer. After that situation caused friction with some fans, the performance delivered a positive response on the field.

Wales now shift their focus to another home match against Denmark on Sunday, hoping this result can serve as a platform for an improved sequence of results.
