Scott McTominay has rejoined training with Napoli after having an operation to fix an irregular heartbeat.
The Scotland midfielder underwent an ablation procedure in Manchester last month, and the minimally invasive surgery was deemed a total success. During his recovery, he had been working out away from his Napoli teammates.
Scott McTominay given green light to play
Napoli stated that McTominay had additional diagnostic exams on Wednesday, and the results indicated that the 29-year-old is able to play.
The club added that the midfielder had thus gone back to training with the rest of the squad following his spell of individual work.
McTominay’s heart issue came to light after he was taken off in the 56th minute of Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A loss to Como in August. A mild benign arrhythmia was detected, which led to the choice to perform corrective treatment.
Heart surgery addressed irregular rhythm
An arrhythmia happens when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or without a regular rhythm. McTominay’s ablation procedure was carried out to fix the issue.
The treatment employs heat or cold energy to make small scars in the heart. These scars stop abnormal electrical signals and are meant to bring back a normal heartbeat.
Scotland missed McTominay while he was out
McTominay’s recovery time also meant he missed four Scotland matches, including Tuesday’s Nations League loss to Slovenia.
His return to training with Napoli occurs as Scotland gets ready for their upcoming games. The Scots are set to play Switzerland and North Macedonia in November.
