Roma director Claudio Ranieri has stressed that the club cannot risk breaching UEFA’s financial fair play regulations. Speaking in an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Ranieri underlined that keeping the books balanced is essential if the Giallorossi want to avoid sanctions that could jeopardize their place in European competitions.
“First of all, we need to respect the accounts,” Ranieri said, pointing out that progress in Serie A and the Europa League directly contributes to the club’s revenue. He admitted that if necessary, Roma may have to sell a player to stay compliant: “At worst, we will need to sacrifice someone. We cannot afford the risk of exclusion from tournaments, so order in the accounts is crucial.”
Missed chance for Sancho
Ranieri also addressed Roma’s summer market activity, confirming that the club had explored a move for Jadon Sancho. He revealed that the deal was financially heavy, but ownership was willing to pursue it to support the manager. However, the transfer was blocked because no key player was sold to create space for such an operation.
“The deal was very costly, but the Friedkins would have gone for it to satisfy the coach,” Ranieri explained. “Without a major sale, though, it wasn’t possible. The club preferred to keep its valuable players.”
Focus on renewals and young talent
Looking ahead, Ranieri spoke about the strategy of relying on younger signings who could develop under the coach and later be sold to meet financial targets. He added that potential contract extensions for captain Lorenzo Pellegrini and forward Paulo Dybala will be influenced by the team’s performances this season.
“The renewals of Pellegrini and Dybala depend on results on the pitch,” Ranieri noted, while reiterating that ownership remains fully supportive of the squad.
