PSG fall to first league defeat against Marseille

Paris St-Germain suffered their first Ligue 1 loss of the campaign in a delayed clash away to Marseille. The hosts went ahead in just the fifth minute when ex-West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd met a Mason Greenwood delivery at the back post, punishing goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier’s failed attempt to deal with the cross.

Marseille came close to extending their lead soon after, with Amine Gouiri rattling the bar.

Missed opportunities for the champions

PSG pressed for an equalizer but found Geronimo Rulli in fine form. The Marseille shot-stopper denied Achraf Hakimi with a sharp stop, while Goncalo Ramos squandered a clear header after the interval.

Luis Enrique’s side, who were without Ousmane Dembele due to injury, struggled to convert possession into goals. Dembele remained in Paris, where he collected the top men’s award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony held during the fixture.

Late drama on the touchline

As the match reached its closing stages, tempers escalated. Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi was shown red in stoppage time after confrontations on the sidelines.

Despite the setback, Marseille secured all three points, climbing to sixth in the table on nine points from five outings. PSG, meanwhile, sits second with 12 points.
