Wolfsburg and Paderborn played out a goalless draw in the opening match of the promotion and relegation play-off, leaving qualification for next season’s Bundesliga to be decided in the return fixture.
The result keeps Paderborn firmly in contention despite history favouring the top-flight side. Since the playoff format was introduced in 2009, only two clubs have finished third in the 2. The Bundesliga has managed to secure promotion to Germany’s highest division.
Wolfsburg are attempting to preserve their place in the Bundesliga for a 30th consecutive season, but Paderborn’s disciplined defensive display prevented the hosts from taking control of the tie before the second leg.
The visitors survived early pressure and gradually settled into the match, ensuring everything remains open heading into Monday night’s decisive meeting at the Home Deluxe Arena.
Seimen and Paderborn’s defense resists Wolfsburg’s pressure
Paderborn produced the first dangerous attempt of the evening and, ultimately, their only shot of the first half. Santiago Castaneda tested Kamil Grabara inside the opening ten minutes with a volley after Filip Bilbija’s initial header had been blocked.
That chance appeared to spark Wolfsburg into action. Jeanuël Belocian and Adam Daghim both threatened as the home side increased the pressure, while Dennis Seimen collected a deflected Christian Eriksen delivery shortly before the interval to preserve parity at the break.
Wolfsburg continued pushing forward after halftime. Daghim forced Seimen into another stop following a dangerous cross before Paderborn coach Ralf Kettemann attempted to ease the pressure by introducing Steffen Tigges and Nick Bätzner just after the hour mark.
Belocian, playing on the right side of Wolfsburg’s back three, later delivered an inviting cross that Daghim met with a header, only for Seimen to deny him again with another important save.
Late drama leaves tie wide open before return leg
Dieter Hecking responded to Wolfsburg’s attacking momentum with changes of his own, sending on Jesper Lindstrøm and Mahmoud Amoura in place of Mattias Svanberg and Daghim.
With 20 minutes remaining, Konstantinos Koulierakis won a free-kick in a dangerous area. Eriksen stepped up and nearly broke the deadlock, but Seimen produced one of the best saves of the evening to keep Paderborn level.
The visitors almost snatched a dramatic victory six minutes from time. Bilbija attempted a lob that looked destined for the net before Denis Vavro and Joakim Mæhle combined to clear the ball off the line.
Paderborn’s night was slightly overshadowed by Jonah Sticker’s dismissal for a second yellow card, meaning he will miss the second leg. Still, the draw leaves the tie completely open ahead of Monday’s decisive clash.
