Nottingham Forest moved a significant step nearer to staying in the Premier League after a commanding away victory over Sunderland, creating an eight-point gap above the relegation zone. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Igor Jesus directed a header towards goal that deflected off Trai Hume and found the net.
The visitors extended their advantage in the 31st minute following a costly mistake from goalkeeper Robin Roefs, whose misplaced pass was intercepted, allowing Chris Wood to finish. Just three minutes later, Morgan Gibbs-White struck powerfully into the bottom corner after being set up by Jesus.
Forest continued their relentless first-half spell when Jesus added another in the 37th minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball after a corner. The scoring was completed deep into stoppage time, with Elliot Anderson finishing a counter-attack to seal an emphatic result.
Survival hopes strengthened by strong run
The victory lifted Forest to 39 points, placing them eight clear of 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur and six ahead of West Ham United. Historically, only six teams have been relegated with that total in a 38-game season, with none since 2011.
Under Vitor Pereira, the side has found form at a crucial stage of the campaign, going six league matches unbeaten with three wins and three draws. This run follows a convincing 4-1 success against Burnley and includes a vital 3-0 win over Tottenham that helped pull them away from danger.
The turnaround has been notable since mid-March, when Forest were drawn back into the bottom three after a West Ham United result against Manchester City. Since then, they have collected 10 points from a possible 12, dramatically improving the outlook in the East Midlands.
Individually, Gibbs-White has maintained excellent form, scoring his seventh goal in as many matches and contributing an assist for Wood. Meanwhile, Wood marked his return from a knee injury with his first goal since opening day, when he scored twice.
Sunderland’s defensive issues exposed
For Sunderland, the defeat represented a missed opportunity to climb into the top eight and strengthen ambitions of European qualification. Instead, they were overwhelmed, conceding three times within six minutes during the first half and failing to recover.
The result marked only the third occasion the club has lost a home league match by five or more goals and the first such defeat since April 1958, when they were beaten 6-1 by Birmingham City. Defensive frailties have become increasingly concerning, with only Burnley and Tottenham conceding more goals than Sunderland in 2026.
Earlier in the season, their defensive record had been among the strongest, with only Arsenal and Manchester City conceding fewer goals before the turn of the year. The recent downturn highlights a sharp decline in solidity at the back.
Sunderland thought they had pulled one back just after the hour through Dan Ballard, but the effort was disallowed after a VAR review identified a foul by Nordi Mukiele on goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Upcoming fixtures
Forest now turn their attention to a Europa League semi-final first leg at home against Aston Villa before an away league trip to Chelsea on 4 May.
Sunderland’s next match sees them travel to face relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers on 2 May.
