Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Sule has decided he will step away from football this summer, bringing his career to a close at 30 after a knee injury suffered in last month’s Bundesliga loss to Hoffenheim.
The Germany international feared the worst when he damaged his knee, believing he had torn a cruciate ligament for a third time. Although medical examinations later confirmed that was not the case, the experience convinced him he no longer wanted to continue playing with the possibility of another major setback.
Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast, Sule revealed the emotional toll of those first moments after the injury, saying he broke down after the initial diagnosis and fear and immediately began confronting the prospect that his time in the game had reached its end.
Fear of another long recovery
Sule explained that once scans showed he had escaped another cruciate ligament tear, his decision became absolute. Rather than feeling relief alone, he saw the result as confirmation that he wanted to move on before facing the possibility of another devastating rehabilitation.
He said he could not bear the thought of preparing for life beyond football — including enjoying freedom, holidays, and time with his children — only to then suffer another severe knee injury that would once again reshape his future.
With his Borussia Dortmund contract due to expire on 30 June, Sule will retire following the club’s final match of the campaign.
Decorated years in Germany
Before joining Dortmund in 2022, Sule played for Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim, building a career that included major domestic and European success.
During his time with Bayern, he collected five Bundesliga championships and was part of the squad that won the Champions League in 2020.
International career and final chapter
On the international stage, Sule earned 49 caps for Germany, represented his country at two World Cups, and helped secure Confederations Cup success in 2017.
Now, after his latest injury scare and with his contract nearing its conclusion, Sule has chosen to walk away from the sport on his own terms at the end of the season.
