Barcelona have reached an agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of Anthony Gordon in a package worth more than £69m.
The England international is expected to complete the remaining formalities before joining up with his national team for a training camp in the United States ahead of the World Cup. Bayern Munich also entered talks with Newcastle during the process, but the German side failed to match the valuation demanded by the Premier League club.
Newcastle had made it clear earlier this year that any departure involving one of their leading players would happen only under conditions favourable to the club. Gordon’s long-term contract, which runs until 2030, strengthened their position during negotiations and allowed them to command a substantial fee.
The transfer is viewed internally as an opportunity for Newcastle to reshape their squad following a disappointing campaign that ended with a 12th-place finish in the Premier League. Funds generated from the move are expected to support significant reinvestment during the summer window.
Everton clause and Gordon’s likely exit
Part of the income from the transfer will be redirected to Everton because of a sell-on agreement included when Gordon left Merseyside in 2023. The former club is due 15% of the profit Newcastle makes from the original deal, which had been worth up to £45m.
Among Newcastle’s senior figures, Gordon had long been considered the most probable high-profile departure this summer. Despite remaining professional in training and receiving praise from head coach Eddie Howe for his attitude, the winger spent the final four matches of the season on the bench.
There were further signs that the club had already begun preparing for life without him. During the final-day defeat at Fulham, youngsters Sean Neave and Alex Murphy were introduced from the bench while Gordon remained unused.
Travelling supporters briefly sang his name after the match, in what ultimately became his farewell appearance as a Newcastle player.
Newcastle alter strategy after Isak experience
This is now the second consecutive summer in which Newcastle are preparing to lose their leading scorer. The circumstances, however, differ greatly from the previous transfer saga involving Alexander Isak.
Last year, Newcastle initially resisted attempts from Liverpool to sign Isak but eventually accepted a British-record £125m offer on deadline day after the striker pushed for the move. At that time, the club was operating without a complete executive structure in place.
The absence of a sporting director was particularly significant during negotiations and dealings with player representatives. Newcastle have since strengthened their hierarchy, with chief executive David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson now firmly established within the organisation.
That change has influenced the club’s approach in the market. While former chief executive Darren Eales previously insisted it would be “crazy” to sell the club’s top talents, Hopkinson adopted a more pragmatic stance earlier this year by stating Newcastle would seek to maximise any opportunities and secure the strongest possible return if key players departed.
Gordon’s departure seen as chance to rebuild
Rather than reluctantly parting with one of their main attackers, Newcastle have viewed Gordon’s sale as a strategic move that can help revitalise a squad that struggled for consistency throughout the campaign.
The club’s handling of the situation reflected that thinking. Gordon continued training with the squad and maintained a positive attitude, yet his reduced role towards the end of the season suggested planning for the future was already underway behind the scenes.
By securing a significant transfer fee for a player still tied to a lengthy contract, Newcastle believe they have placed themselves in a stronger position to refresh the squad and strengthen multiple areas during the summer.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have won the race for Gordon after moving decisively with an offer Newcastle considered acceptable, allowing the England forward to prepare for the next stage of his career before linking up with his national side.
