Munoz sends Colombia into World Cup knockout stage

Colombia secured a 1-0 victory over DR Congo in Guadalajara to book their place in the World Cup knockout rounds. Backed by a crowd that overwhelmingly supported them, the South Americans controlled much of the contest but struggled to convert their opportunities before eventually breaking the deadlock late in the second half.

The winning moment arrived in the 76th minute when Juan Fernando Quintero threaded a precise pass into the path of Daniel Munoz. The Crystal Palace wing-back struck with his left foot, and a slight touch from a defender diverted the ball beyond goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi at the near post.

The result gave Colombia a second consecutive win and guaranteed progression from Group K. They now sit at the summit of the standings, while the DR Congo remains third and must defeat Uzbekistan in their final group fixture to retain any hope of advancing.

Early dominance without reward

The Colombians began at a high tempo and nearly moved ahead within four minutes. After Jhon Arias saw an effort saved, the rebound fell kindly for Munoz, but his close-range attempt found only the side netting.

Shortly afterward, Munoz thought he had opened the scoring when he forced the ball over the line after his initial header had been stopped. However, the effort was ruled out because he had strayed marginally offside.

Colombia continued to dictate play throughout a relentless opening spell, creating repeated pressure around the DR Congo penalty area. Despite their superiority, Mpasi produced several important interventions to keep the score level.

Persistence pays after the break

The pattern of the match remained largely unchanged following half-time, with Colombia maintaining control and generating the better chances. Luis Diaz came particularly close to giving his side the lead five minutes into the second period but failed to beat Mpasi when presented with a clear opportunity.

The danger was not over for the DR Congo, yet Arias dragged the rebound wide, and another promising opening went begging. As the missed chances accumulated, Colombia faced the prospect of a frustrating evening despite their dominance.

That concern disappeared when Quintero delivered the decisive pass and Munoz applied the finishing touch. The goal finally provided the breakthrough Colombia had been searching for throughout the match.

DR Congo fall short in late response

After falling behind, DR Congo attempted to force an equaliser during the closing stages. They pushed more players forward and searched for a route back into the contest as time began to run out.

Colombia, however, remained organised and protected their advantage until the final whistle. Their disciplined defending ensured that the single goal would be enough to secure all three points.

The victory reflected their overall performance, having controlled large portions of the game and created the majority of the meaningful opportunities.

Munoz continues impressive tournament

While Colombia possesses renowned attacking players such as Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez, it has been Munoz who has emerged as one of the team’s most influential performers at this World Cup.

The wingback has now scored in both group matches and was once again at the centre of Colombia’s attacking play. Considering the opportunities he generated against DR Congo, he could easily have added more goals to his tally.

His willingness to arrive in dangerous areas from a wide position repeatedly caused problems. Whether meeting crosses, reacting to rebounds, or making well-timed forward runs, he consistently found space behind the opposition defence.

Munoz’s decisive contribution secured qualification for Colombia and highlighted the qualities that have made him such an important figure. Opponents are now likely to pay greater attention to his movement, although limiting his impact may prove far easier in theory than in practice.
