Midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan could miss Inter Milan’s upcoming Serie A encounter with ACF Fiorentina after suffering a muscle issue during the weekend.
The Armenian picked up the problem in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta BC. Reports from Italy indicate that the midfielder will undergo further examinations in the next few days to determine how serious the injury is.
According to Italian media, including Calciomercato.com, early expectations are that the veteran will not be available for the league match scheduled for March 22 in Florence.
Injury came after half-time introduction
Mkhitaryan did not start the match against Atalanta but was introduced at the break. He replaced Petar Sucic at half-time as Inter looked to gain control of the game.
The experienced midfielder played the entire second half, completing 45 minutes on the pitch before the match ended level. It was during that appearance that he suffered the muscle problem which now threatens to keep him out of the next fixture.
While Mkhitaryan is likely to miss the trip to Florence, Inter are hopeful that Hakan Çalhanoğlu could recover in time and return to the squad for the same match.
Future at Inter still under discussion
Mkhitaryan’s current agreement with Inter runs until the end of the season. With the campaign approaching its final stages, the club is reportedly evaluating whether to extend the midfielder’s stay.
Italian sources suggest the Nerazzurri are considering offering the Armenian a new one-year contract that would keep him at the club beyond this season.
Despite being 37 years old, the former Arsenal FC and Manchester United midfielder has remained an active part of the squad.
Season contribution and Inter’s title push
During the current campaign, Mkhitaryan has made 30 appearances in all competitions. Across those matches he has scored two goals and registered three assists.
Inter continue to sit at the top of the Serie A standings. The defending champions hold an eight-point advantage over city rivals AC Milan, although Milan still have one match yet to play.
With the season entering a decisive phase, Inter will hope the midfielder’s injury proves minor and that he can return to action soon.
