AC Milan confirmed a sweeping restructuring of the club after their failure to secure a top-four finish in Serie A. The Rossoneri entered the final matchday knowing that a single point would have guaranteed qualification for the Champions League, holding both a two-point cushion and the superior head-to-head record over Como 1907.
Instead, Milan suffered a damaging 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari Calcio despite taking the lead, allowing their season to unravel at the decisive moment. The loss completed a disappointing conclusion to a campaign that had once appeared capable of producing a title challenge.
Reports earlier in the day had suggested that owner Gerry Cardinale was preparing major changes behind the scenes, and those expectations were quickly confirmed by an official statement released on the club’s website.
Club statement labels season an ‘unequivocal failure’
In their announcement, Milan explained that the objective set by ownership after the previous campaign had been to return to the Champions League while building a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Italian football.
The club pointed out that, for much of the season, the Rossoneri remained among the leading sides in Serie A and were considered genuine contenders for the Scudetto. However, the final weeks of the campaign were described as completely out of line with the standards shown earlier in the year.
Milan ultimately branded the season an “unequivocal failure,” stressing that the collapse in the closing stretch — capped by the defeat to Cagliari — made significant changes unavoidable.
Allegri, Tare, Furlani and Moncada all dismissed
The statement confirmed the immediate departures of head coach Massimiliano Allegri, CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.
Milan thanked each of them for their contribution to the club before announcing that additional appointments would be revealed later as preparations begin for next season. According to the statement, the intention is to create a new football structure capable of restoring stability and competitiveness.
Only senior advisor Zlatan Ibrahimović remains in place as Cardinale moves ahead with a complete reorganization of the sporting hierarchy.
End of a short-lived project at San Siro
Allegri’s second spell in charge lasted just one season. Across 42 competitive matches, Milan collected 22 victories alongside 10 draws and 10 defeats, numbers that ultimately failed to satisfy the club’s expectations.
Tare’s time at San Siro proved even shorter, as he had arrived only last summer together with Allegri before both were removed less than a year later. Moncada, meanwhile, had been part of the club since 2018 as chief scout and later stepped into the technical director role in 2023.
Furlani’s exit also marks the end of a lengthy period of influence within Milan’s leadership. He joined the board in 2019 and became CEO three years later, serving as a key representative linked to former owners Elliott Management. Following RedBird’s refinancing of the vendor loan with Elliott, his position within the organization was no longer considered necessary.
