Manchester United has reportedly abandoned their planned move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson despite having previously reached an agreement with the Italian club. According to several sources, the proposed transfer was valued at €45 million, made up of €40.5 million in fixed payments and a further €4.5 million in performance-related bonuses.
The deal had been settled in June but remained incomplete because the Brazilian midfielder was away with his national team at the 2026 World Cup. His participation in the tournament delayed the final stages of the transfer process.
The decision follows additional medical checks
After Brazil’s elimination from the competition, Manchester United requested that Ederson undergo further detailed medical examinations before giving the final approval. Those assessments were completed during the last 48 hours.
Despite that, reports from Sky Sport Italia, Fabrizio Romano, and other outlets state that Manchester United informed Atalanta they would no longer proceed with the transfer.
The Serie A club does not believe the decision was connected to the medical evaluations or any significant physical issue. Their position is that the Premier League side simply reconsidered the move and decided against completing the signing.
Atalanta await midfielder’s future
Atalanta maintains there are no concerns over a serious injury, pointing out that Ederson would not have represented Brazil at the World Cup if such a problem had existed.
The midfielder remains under contract until June 2028, leaving uncertainty over his next step. It is now unclear whether he will attract interest from another club during the transfer window or continue with Atalanta under new head coach Maurizio Sarri.
