Harry Maguire will not feature in Manchester United’s Premier League visit to Chelsea FC on Saturday after receiving an additional one-match suspension following his red card against AFC Bournemouth last month.
The 33-year-old defender was dismissed late in the 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium after bringing down Evanilson inside the penalty area, conceding a spot-kick in the process. The incident occurred in the 78th minute and left United finishing the match with ten men.
Further punishment followed when the Football Association charged Maguire with improper conduct for remarks directed toward fourth official Matt Donohue as he exited the pitch. Alongside the suspension, he was fined £30,000.
According to the written report, Donohue stated that Maguire approached him and shouted, “You’re a joke. You’re all a ******* joke.” The defender disputed that claim, insisting he did not aim the comment at officials but admitted his reaction was inappropriate and issued an apology.
The regulatory panel considered imposing a longer ban but ultimately settled on an additional single match, citing mitigating factors including Maguire’s acceptance of the charge.
Injuries and suspensions stretch United squad
United’s defensive issues are compounded by the absence of Lisandro Martínez, who will also miss the trip to Stamford Bridge after being sent off for violent conduct during the 2-1 defeat by Leeds United.
Martinez was dismissed for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair, a decision that head coach Michael Carrick described as “one of the worst” he has seen. Carrick indicated the club may challenge the red card, though an overturn appears unlikely.
Adding to the concerns, Matthijs de Ligt is expected to be unavailable due to an ongoing back problem. These setbacks leave United severely short of options in central defence.
As a result, Carrick may have to rely on inexperienced players such as 20-year-old Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven, both of whom are among the few recognised centre-backs currently available.
Carrick weighs defensive options for crucial clash
The most straightforward solution would be pairing Yoro and Heaven, though their combined inexperience presents a significant risk in such an important fixture. Yoro, despite his £52m price tag, struggled in the recent loss to Leeds, while Heaven has yet to start a match under Carrick.
More seasoned alternatives exist, with Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui both capable of operating centrally, having done so previously in a back-three system. Their experience could provide stability whether United deploys a two- or three-man defence.
Midfielders have also been used in emergency roles, with Casemiro having filled in at centre-back before. However, his importance in midfield makes such a move unlikely from the outset. Manuel Ugarte briefly covered the position against Leeds after Martinez’s dismissal but is not expected to begin there.
Another option is Tyler Fredericson, who has limited senior experience, including a brief substitute appearance since starting in the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby. His involvement would represent a bold call given the stakes.
United currently sit third in the Premier League, level on points with Aston Villa and three ahead of Liverpool FC with six matches remaining. A victory for Chelsea would cut the gap to four points and intensify the race for Champions League qualification.
