Lukaku to rejoin Napoli after training dispute

Romelu Lukaku is reportedly on course to resume training with Napoli after a period of tension with the club. Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport indicates that the striker has informed the club, through his representative, that he will be back with the squad on Monday. This return comes as Napoli prepare for the final five fixtures of the 2025–26 Serie A campaign.

The situation follows disciplinary action taken against the Belgian forward, who was fined after failing to attend training in March as requested by the club.

Injury struggles limit season impact

Lukaku’s season has been heavily disrupted by physical setbacks. A serious hamstring problem suffered during a pre-season friendly against Olympiacos ruled him out for several months, delaying his involvement until January. Even after returning, his participation has remained minimal.

Across all competitions, he has managed just 64 minutes over seven substitute appearances, with only 40 minutes played in Serie A. Ongoing fitness concerns have prevented him from gaining consistent match rhythm.

Absence during international break caused friction

Further complications arose during the March international window. Lukaku did not link up with Belgium due to a hip flexor issue, but instead of reporting to Napoli’s training facilities as instructed, he stayed in Belgium to continue his recovery. This decision led to disciplinary measures from the club.

Reports also suggest that Lukaku has not met head coach Antonio Conte in person since Napoli’s 1-0 win over Cagliari on March 20. His expected return to training is set to bring an end to that absence and potentially ease tensions within the club.
