Lens put an end to Lyon’s unbeaten start in Ligue 1 by winning 2-1, turning in a strong display in Yannick Cahuzac’s first home game as head coach. Florian Thauvin was pivotal with two assists, while Khalis Merah’s late strike was not enough to earn a point for Paulo Fonseca’s team.
The game signalled Ligue 1’s resumption after a three-week pause, with Lens eager to halt a four-match league winless streak and second-placed Lyon aiming to preserve their impressive beginning. Cahuzac, who took over after Dino Toppmöller left by mutual agreement, sought to become the first coach to defeat Fonseca’s Lyon in the league this season.
Lens vs Lyon: Thauvin drives Cahuzac’s team
Lens started with assurance, dictating play and generating the superior chances. Florian Sotoca almost broke the deadlock with a half-volley, but Dominik Greif pulled off a superb save from close range. Lyon found it hard to impose themselves and did not manage a single shot on target in the first half.
Sotoca, 35, was given a surprising start due to Abdallah Sima’s absence, playing ahead of Franjo Ivanovic. He justified Cahuzac’s choice by bringing down Thauvin’s cross on his chest before striking a clean half-volley into the goal. The goal also made Sotoca the oldest player to score for Lens since Cahuzac himself.
Lens had chances to double their lead before halftime. Thauvin drew another fine save from Greif, while Odsonne Edouard could not convert a one-on-one opportunity against the Slovakian goalkeeper, who was Lyon’s best player in the first half. Lens appeared more cohesive in their shape, strategy and energy.
Lyon improved after the break and started to create opportunities, but Robin Risser stayed sharp. Their challenge grew tougher when Loïs Openda had to leave the field with an injury. The second half was much more balanced as Fonseca’s side began to apply pressure on Lens.
Florian Thauvin and Lens seal Ligue 1 win
Thauvin made the difference once more when he sent in a deep free-kick that let Matthieu Udol evade Zachary Athekame’s marking and head in. The goal seemed to give Lens control with 15 minutes left.
Yet the final stages delivered a surprising turn. Udol received a red card for stepping on Khalis Merah’s heel, reducing Lens to ten men. Within two minutes, Merah cut the lead for Lyon, creating a tense ending.
Lens had to protect their slender advantage as Lyon surged forward seeking an equaliser. Despite the pressure, Cahuzac’s team held firm to secure a vital 2-1 win and inflict Lyon’s first league loss of the season.
Both clubs are also getting ready for European commitments. Lens will host Sporting CP in the Champions League, while Lyon will face Crystal Palace in the Europa League.
