Paris St-Germain moved into a commanding position in their Champions League last-16 tie after defeating Chelsea 5-2 at Parc des Princes, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring twice late on to leave the English side facing a huge challenge in the return leg.
Chelsea had battled impressively for long periods and had twice drawn level, but a costly mistake from goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen shifted the momentum decisively toward the defending European champions late in the match.
PSG struck first after only 10 minutes when Bradley Barcola fired a powerful effort through a crowded penalty area and inside the near post. The chance came after Ousmane Dembele’s cross was headed into Barcola’s path.
Jorgensen soon prevented further damage by tipping Dembele’s fierce shot on to the post, and Chelsea responded when Malo Gusto surged forward and finished past PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov after being found by Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea respond but PSG stay dangerous
Chelsea’s equaliser did not last long. Just moments after Cole Palmer sent a close-range attempt straight at Safonov, PSG broke forward and regained the advantage.
Dembele outran defender Wesley Fofana before calmly placing his finish into the net. The move was created by Desire Doue, who skipped past challenges from Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah in midfield before sending the French forward through on goal.
Chelsea fought back again after the break. Doue lost possession in midfield, allowing Neto to drive forward and deliver a low cross that Fernandez guided into the net to make it 2-2.
The match remained finely balanced until PSG manager Luis Enrique introduced Kvaratskhelia from the bench shortly afterwards, a substitution that would prove decisive.
Goalkeeper error sparks decisive shift
Chelsea’s resistance collapsed when Jorgensen played a misplaced pass directly to Barcola. With the goalkeeper out of position, Vitinha calmly lifted the ball over him to restore PSG’s lead for the third time.
That moment transformed the closing stages. Soon after, Kvaratskhelia produced a superb curling strike from the edge of the penalty area to extend the advantage.
The Georgia international then struck again with virtually the final action of the game, finishing neatly from close range to complete the scoring and give PSG a three-goal cushion ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Attacking quality proves decisive
Despite arriving at the match under some pressure following a domestic defeat to Monaco and an inconsistent start to 2026, PSG demonstrated the attacking strength that helped them win the Champions League last season.
Barcola answered pre-match questions about his long wait for a Champions League goal by scoring early and delivering an impressive performance, while Dembele also played a key role in the victory.
Luis Enrique’s side showed their depth when Kvaratskhelia entered the game and quickly made a major impact, highlighting the attacking options available to the Spanish coach.
Chelsea matched PSG creatively for much of the contest, showing energy in midfield and a willingness to attack, but ultimately struggled to contain the French club’s offensive power.
Costly mistakes leave Chelsea with huge task
For Chelsea, the evening turned from promise to disappointment in the final stages. For more than an hour they had competed evenly with the European champions, yet a combination of errors and lapses in concentration proved damaging.
Jorgensen’s mistake was the most significant moment, raising further questions about Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation after Robert Sanchez had earlier been dropped by recently appointed head coach Liam Rosenior.
Other problems followed as the match slipped away. Captain Reece James stumbled under pressure from Senny Mayulu during the move that led to PSG’s fourth goal, while the fifth came after Chelsea were caught out of position.
Frustration also spilled over late in the match when Neto pushed a ball boy after the fourth goal, triggering a confrontation between players from both teams. The winger later attempted to make amends by giving the ball boy his shirt but could still face possible disciplinary action.
Chelsea must now attempt to overturn a three-goal deficit when PSG visit Stamford Bridge for the second leg on Tuesday.
