Injury-stricken Real Madrid will face Barcelona without Mbappé

Real Madrid head into Sunday’s meeting with Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou knowing only a victory will keep their La Liga hopes alive beyond this weekend. Anything less would leave their title challenge on the brink, and their mission has become even more difficult because of a growing list of unavailable players.

Federico Valverde had already been ruled out following the concussion he suffered after the training-ground altercation with Aurelien Tchouameni. Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, and Arda Guler were also sidelined through injury, leaving Madrid significantly weakened before one of the season’s biggest fixtures.

Mbappe withdrawn after training discomfort

The situation worsened on Sunday morning when Kylian Mbappe was left out of Alvaro Arbeloa’s travelling squad for the trip to Catalonia. Although he had initially been expected to feature in some capacity against Barcelona, plans changed after he was unable to finish Saturday’s session because of physical discomfort.

According to Diario AS, the French forward had been considered for a substitute appearance at the Spotify Camp Nou, but the final decision was to avoid taking any chances. His absence removes another important attacking option for Madrid at a time when squad depth is already under serious strain.

Courtois returns as Madrid fight to survive

Without Mbappe, Real Madrid must now find a way to remain competitive in a match that could effectively determine whether the title race continues. There is optimism that the forward could return against Real Oviedo on Thursday, but by then, Barcelona avoiding defeat would already make that contest far less significant in the championship battle.

Despite the negative injury developments, there is one major boost for Madrid: Thibaut Courtois is back fit and will start in goal. His return offers some encouragement, even as the team arrives in Barcelona under far from ideal circumstances.
