Howe reassures on Tonali future amid Arsenal links

Eddie Howe has insisted there is no concern surrounding Sandro Tonali’s situation at Newcastle United despite speculation connecting the midfielder with Arsenal late in the transfer window. Reports on deadline day claimed the league leaders were considering a move, but Newcastle maintained the player was unavailable and confirmed no discussions had taken place.

Tonali’s representative, Giuseppe Riso, also dismissed suggestions of contact with Arsenal. However, speaking to Sky Italia, he hinted that any conversation around valuation could be revisited later in the year, should Newcastle be willing to engage.

The club’s position remained firm throughout the window, stressing that Tonali continues to be a central part of their plans and was never offered to potential suitors.

Howe’s conversation with Tonali

Howe revealed he spoke directly with the Italy international on Monday, shortly before Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City. According to the manager, the midfielder showed no signs of distraction and was fully focused on the upcoming fixture.

The head coach explained that Tonali’s attention was solely on preparing for the match and helping the team progress, leaving no room for outside noise. Howe added that, based on their discussion, there was no issue from the player’s side.

Reiterating his view, Howe described Tonali as content and committed, noting that his assessment was based purely on personal interaction rather than external reports.

Contract security and club outlook

Tonali previously stated in November that he felt settled at Newcastle while also acknowledging the challenges of long-term planning in football. He originally arrived from AC Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract.

After serving a 10-month suspension related to betting offences, Tonali was eager to repay the club’s backing and subsequently agreed to an extra year on his deal. Newcastle also holds an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, potentially keeping him until 2030.

Howe believes the club are now better equipped to handle interest in key figures following the appointment of sporting director Ross Wilson. While acknowledging that standout performers will always attract attention, he stressed the desire to maintain squad stability and continue building, with Tonali seen as an important part of that process.
