Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund described his temporary switch to Napoli as a “great decision” after collecting the first trophy of his career with the Italian side.
Napoli defeated Bologna in the Italian Super Cup final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Brazilian attacker David Neres scoring both goals in a convincing display.
The victory added another honor for Scotland international Scott McTominay, following last season’s Serie A title, while it marked a debut triumph for 22-year-old Hojlund, who arrived on loan in September.
After the final whistle, the Denmark striker shared an image on Instagram alongside the cup, accompanied by a caption praising his choice to join the Naples club.
Hojlund has found the net seven times in 19 appearances since his arrival and also scored in Thursday’s 2-0 Italian Cup semi-final victory against AC Milan.
From Old Trafford struggles to Naples revival
The striker originally moved to Manchester in 2023 in a £72m transfer from Atalanta but struggled to make an impact in England.
Last season brought only four league goals, leading to his exit after being considered surplus to requirements.
His current agreement includes a condition that will see Napoli sign him permanently for £38m next summer.
In contrast to his difficulties in the Premier League, his form in Italy has been more productive, contributing regularly across competitions.
Thursday’s semi-final goal against Milan underlined his growing influence since the move.
Neres shines as Napoli claim third Super Cup
David Neres opened the scoring with a precise curling strike and later added a second after Bologna were punished while attempting to build from the back.
Speaking after the match, Napoli forward Matteo Politano said the team arrived determined to lift the trophy and felt their performance reflected that ambition.
He added that more goals could have been scored, but satisfaction remained high following the win.
The triumph represents Napoli’s third Super Cup title, with Neres ending the tournament on three goals after also scoring in the semi-final against AC Milan.
The competition, traditionally involving the Serie A and Italian Cup winners, was expanded in 2023 to include four teams and is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia until 2029.
