Harry Kane’s new Bayern deal puts Premier League record at risk

Harry Kane’s choice to prolong his stay with Bayern Munich until 2029 may carry significant implications for both England and the Premier League record books. The England skipper has dedicated the remaining peak years of his career to the Bundesliga champions, possibly ending any prospect of a return to English football.

After being named Ballon d’Or winner, Kane has further cemented his status as one of the world’s top players. His new deal also opens up an intriguing scenario: the 33-year-old could stay involved with England until Euro 2028 and possibly even the 2030 World Cup.

Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich contract changes his future

Bayern acted swiftly to tie down Kane following his Ballon d’Or success, offering the striker a contract running until 2029. Since joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £86m in August 2023, he has become one of the most influential players in the club’s history.

His statistics are impressive: 102 goals in 102 Bundesliga appearances, two league titles, and three consecutive Golden Boot awards. Bayern had little incentive to let such a prolific forward go, especially with other clubs potentially monitoring his situation.

Former England striker Chris Sutton feels Kane still has plenty to offer, despite being in the later stages of his career. He told BBC Sport that the striker’s age should not be a major worry because his game relies on much more than physical speed.

Sutton pointed to Kane’s finishing, link-up play, and exceptional football intelligence as traits that should keep him at the top for several more years. He also cited the forward’s current fitness and performances for Bayern and England as proof that he remains at his best.

The Premier League goals record is increasingly out of reach

Kane’s contract ends shortly before his 36th birthday, making a Premier League return increasingly unlikely. He left Tottenham as the club’s all-time top scorer, with 280 goals in 435 appearances, but an emotional return to north London now seems less probable.

The new deal also reinforces Alan Shearer’s position at the top of the Premier League’s all-time scoring list. The former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker ended his career with 260 goals in 441 league games, while Kane scored 213 in 320 matches for Tottenham.

With a 47-goal gap between them, Kane would need an extraordinary late-career scoring streak to challenge Shearer’s record. His choice to stay in Germany means the chance to close that gap could become increasingly limited.

There is also uncertainty over Erling Haaland’s potential impact on the record books. Manchester City are awaiting punishment after being found guilty of breaching financial regulations, which the club denies, leaving further questions about the Norwegian’s long-term future.

Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup remain possible targets

One of the biggest beneficiaries of Kane’s decision could be England manager Thomas Tuchel. Having worked with the striker at Bayern before, Tuchel will welcome the prospect of his captain maintaining his current level for several more years.

Kane’s contract clearly indicates that Euro 2028, to be held in the UK and Ireland, is firmly in his plans. By the time his Bayern deal expires, he will also be just a year away from the 2030 World Cup in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, with centenary opening matches scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Sutton believes the European Championship should not be a problem for Kane if he stays fit. He also refused to rule out the striker featuring at the following World Cup, arguing that his intelligence and passing ability could make up for any physical decline.

The former England forward compared Kane’s development to that of Teddy Sheringham, who continued playing and scoring in the Premier League for West Ham United into his 40s. He also mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career, though he stressed that Kane’s ability to drop deeper and influence games through passing makes him a different type of player.

England still has no obvious replacement for Kane

Kane’s continued importance to England is especially clear given the lack of competition for his position. Sutton believes there is currently no English striker close to the Bayern forward’s level of effectiveness, making his experience and quality even more valuable to Tuchel.

The striker’s ability to adapt his game could also help him remain a key figure as he ages. Instead of relying on pace, he can drop deeper, dictate attacks, and use his exceptional game understanding to create chances for teammates.

His response to Euro 2024 offers another example of his determination. Kane had a difficult tournament as England reached the final before losing to Spain, looking tired and struggling to reproduce his usual performances.

There were calls for Ollie Watkins to replace him, and Kane was substituted in every knockout match, including the final in Berlin, when he came off after 61 minutes. Nevertheless, he finished the competition as joint top scorer with three goals from seven appearances.

His performances since then have made the prospect of dropping him from England’s starting line-up increasingly hard to imagine. Bayern will be hoping his continued brilliance brings more trophies to Munich, while Tuchel will see the new contract as a chance to keep England’s most important attacking player involved in the pursuit of international success.
