Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has reached an agreement to remain with the club until 2028 after guiding the team to another Spanish league crown.
Victory over Real Madrid on Sunday confirmed Barca’s 29th La Liga championship, marking Flick’s second domestic title in his two seasons at the helm. The German coach had already been tied to the club for next season, but this new arrangement adds another year and includes the possibility of one further extension.
Flick, 61, expressed his satisfaction with the renewed commitment, saying he was pleased the club had shown trust in both him and his staff to continue their work for at least one or two more years.
Coach welcomes shorter-term structure
The Barcelona boss explained that while many managers may seek longer deals lasting several years, he believes a more limited arrangement suits the club’s environment.
He said the agreement through 2028, with an optional extra year, provides balance for both sides because Barcelona and Flick each retain flexibility over the future.
Flick added that he values the structure of the contract and considers it a positive solution rather than pursuing a significantly longer-term commitment.
Strong domestic success under his leadership
Barcelona secured the league title with three matches left to play and still has the chance to finish the campaign with a total of 100 points.
Since replacing Xavi in the summer of 2024, Flick has delivered major silverware, including La Liga success and Copa del Rey victory, during his first season in charge.
His tenure has quickly produced consistent domestic achievements, reinforcing the club’s confidence in extending his stay.
Personal loss and distinguished previous record
Sunday’s match came during an emotional period for Flick after the death of his father over the weekend, with a minute’s silence observed before kickoff.
Before arriving in Spain, Flick managed Germany for two years after a highly successful spell with Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021.
During his time at Bayern, he won the Bundesliga title in both of his seasons and also led the German side to Champions League and Club World Cup success in 2020.
