Gavi sidelined after knee surgery, set for lengthy layoff

Barcelona confirmed that midfielder Gavi faces a long absence following an operation on his right knee.

The 21-year-old was involved in the team’s first two fixtures of the campaign before picking up the problem during a training session in August.

Initial concerns centered on the possibility of another anterior cruciate ligament issue, echoing the serious injury he suffered in 2023.

Medical findings and procedure

Examinations showed the Spanish international had avoided fresh damage to his cruciate ligament. However, doctors identified cartilage problems that required intervention.

The club revealed that the youngster underwent an arthroscopy, during which specialists repaired the medial meniscus and preserved the tissue by suturing it.

According to Barcelona’s announcement, his rehabilitation period is likely to last between four and five months.

Career milestones and previous injury

Gavi broke into the senior side in 2021, becoming the club’s fourth youngest debutant at the time.

Since then, he has featured in 155 matches, netting ten times and collecting five pieces of silverware.

In November 2023, while representing Spain, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that sidelined him for nearly a year.

The Catalan giants currently occupy second place in the domestic table. They trail Real Madrid by five points but still have one game in hand.
