Frosinone moved up to fourth position in the Serie A table following a 4-2 home victory over Sassuolo on Friday night. Italy Under-21 international Antonio Raimondo netted three times in an entertaining match, helping Massimiliano Alvini’s team get back to winning form after their earlier 3-0 loss to Napoli.
Frosinone had begun the 2026-27 season impressively, securing wins against Fiorentina, Venezia, and Como before the defeat to Napoli. Alvini received the Serie A Coach of the Month award for September, while Raimondo came into the game having been given the league’s Rising Star of the Month prize.
Sassuolo came in following an inconsistent sequence of results, having drawn 1-1 with Milan, lost 2-1 to Monza, beaten Juventus 3-2, and drawn 2-2 with Bologna.
Frosinone vs Sassuolo: first half full of goals
Frosinone went ahead within the first 10 minutes after Sassuolo were caught trying to build from the back. Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric played the ball to Darryl Bakola inside the box, but the midfielder gave it away, letting Giacomo Calo pick up the loose ball and blast it into the roof of the net in a one-on-one situation.
Bakola made up for the error quickly by winning the ball during another Frosinone attack and playing a first-time pass forward to Domenico Berardi. With room to run into, Berardi went around Lorenzo Palmisani before finishing from a narrow angle to pull Sassuolo level.
The home side went back in front about 10 minutes later when Muric failed to gather a cross near the six-yard box. Raimondo was quickest to react to the goalkeeper’s fumble and stabbed the ball into the net from close range.
Raimondo scored again after another defensive error from Sassuolo. Cas Odenthal’s badly judged backward header caused trouble for Muric, and the Frosinone striker read the ball’s bounce before capitalizing on the goalkeeper’s failure to deal with it. Sassuolo, however, hit back before the break as Kristian Thorstvedt traded passes with Sebastiano Esposito and broke through the defence to make it 3-2.
Antonio Raimondo hat-trick lifts Frosinone in Serie A
The quick first half carried on with Muric stopping Raimondo at his near post right after the restart from the centre. Sassuolo also looked dangerous early in the second period, but Romano Schmid could not find the top corner after a strong one-handed diving save from the goalkeeper.
Raimondo sealed his hat-trick 10 minutes into the second half. After a corner, Giorgi Kvernadze sent a cross into the area during the following phase of play. Fares Ghedjemis then forced Muric into a save with a header across goal, but the rebound fell to Raimondo, who finished to put Frosinone 4-2 ahead.
The result lifts Frosinone into fourth place with 13 points from their first seven matches since returning to the top flight. Sassuolo stay 11th on eight points, with nine other matches still to be played this season.
