Forest waste chances as Cho header seals advantage for Midtjylland

Substitute Cho Gue-sung struck late to hand Midtjylland a narrow advantage after Nottingham Forest failed to turn a dominant display into goals in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie at the City Ground.

Forest controlled much of the contest despite extremely difficult weather, with heavy rain and strong winds sweeping across the stadium throughout the match. The home side created early pressure, although they were briefly threatened when Murillo had to clear Junior Brumado’s header off the line during the opening exchanges.

From that point the English side largely dictated proceedings. Elliot Anderson proved influential in midfield, driving forward with the ball, linking up attacks, and threading passes as the Danish team struggled to escape their own half for long periods.

The hosts produced a stream of opportunities before the interval, with Anderson, Igor Jesus, Ola Aina, and Omari Hutchinson all forcing saves from goalkeeper Elias Olafsson during a dominant first half that ended without a breakthrough.

Forest continue pressure after the break

Manager Vitor Pereira altered his defensive structure at the break, switching from a back three to a four-man defence. The adjustment allowed Forest to push even higher up the pitch and keep Midtjylland pinned deep inside their territory.

Opportunities kept arriving for the home side, although fortune also deserted them at times. Aina came close to finding the top corner only to see his own teammate Morgan Gibbs-White unintentionally block the close-range attempt.

Midtjylland rarely threatened but almost produced a surprise when substitute Valdemar Byskov struck the crossbar with a left-footed effort during one of their few attacking moves of the evening.

Forest continued to miss chances, with Nicolas Dominguez and Jesus unable to capitalise as the weather began to improve and the rain finally eased.

Cho punishes Forest in an indecisive moment

After surviving long spells under pressure, the Danish visitors eventually found the breakthrough when their opportunity arrived late in the match.

Cho Gue-sung, introduced from the bench, was left with space inside the area and met a cross with a header that beat the goalkeeper to give Midtjylland a valuable goal ahead of next week’s second leg.

The outcome was a harsh one for Forest, who finished the night with 22 attempts but no reward for their efforts, while Midtjylland showed clinical efficiency with the decisive moment.

Positives despite frustrating result

Pereira only took charge in February, becoming Forest’s fourth manager of the campaign after being appointed to steer the club away from a relegation battle. European progress has largely been viewed as an added opportunity rather than the primary objective.

The Portuguese coach began his tenure with a victory over Fenerbahce but has since struggled to generate momentum, with the team now without a win in their past five matches in all competitions.

Forest had eight days to prepare for the first leg following their 2-2 draw with Manchester City, and their performance suggested the extended training period had a positive effect even if the result did not follow.

Anderson stood out with an impressive display, while Gibbs-White brought energy to the attack, and Hutchinson — one of three changes from the draw against City — also produced an eye-catching performance.

Midtjylland, who had previously beaten Forest 3-2 in the league phase and finished third overall in the standings, were content to defend and counterattack. They also received several warnings from the referee for time-wasting but ultimately capitalised on their single decisive opportunity.
