Flick’s team is being criticized for its defensive play

Barcelona’s strong sequence of results since November has unravelled in the span of a few days, exposing underlying problems and prompting renewed scrutiny of their methods under Hansi Flick.

Back-to-back defeats spark doubts

Prior to last week, Barcelona had suffered just one loss in months. However, a heavy 4-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid was followed by a 2-1 setback to Girona, abruptly halting their momentum and casting doubt over the perceived progress.

The visit to Montilivi was meant to deliver a response after the humiliation in Madrid. Instead, similar shortcomings resurfaced. Despite internal discussions in which players reportedly suggested subtle adjustments to the tactical approach, Flick responded by reinforcing his philosophy, calling for greater aggression and improved positioning rather than altering the blueprint.

Full-back positions under scrutiny

While collective shortcomings were evident in both matches, attention has increasingly turned to the defensive flanks. According to Sport, there is mounting unease regarding the performances of the full-backs.

Jules Kounde has been struggling for an extended period without clear signs of recovery in form. On the opposite side, Alejandro Balde was repeatedly targeted during the defeat at the Metropolitano. His display in Madrid has been labelled insufficient, with criticism focused on defensive recovery, intensity and decision-making. The issues are described as recurring rather than isolated incidents.

Limited competition and internal solutions

Despite the criticism, changes to the starting line-up appear unlikely. Joao Cancelo is viewed primarily as rotational support for Kounde rather than a direct replacement, while Gerard Martin provides an option behind Balde, who is still expected to keep his place. Coaching staff plan to conduct individual sessions with both defenders in an effort to address the concerns.

A shortage of genuine competition for spots has arguably contributed to the situation. It is notable that Eric Garcia has not been deployed more frequently at right-back, despite having filled in effectively for Kounde during injury absences last season and again earlier in the current campaign. Flick may consider Garcia too valuable in other roles to shift him back to that position.
