Mahrez inspires Algeria to 2026 World Cup qualification

Riyad Mahrez took center stage as Algeria secured their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Somalia. The Algerian captain showcased his class early on, providing the assist for Mohamed Amoura’s first goal and then striking a precise rising half-volley in the 19th minute to double the lead.

The winger’s influence did not stop there. In the second half, Mahrez outmaneuvered his opponent to set up Amoura’s second, completing the scoring for Algeria. Both Mahrez and Amoura were substituted shortly afterward, having played decisive roles in the win.

Despite opportunities for Youcef Belaili to increase the margin, the match concluded to the delight of the home supporters in Oran, who celebrated the team’s success.

Guaranteed top spot in group G

With this win, Algeria are confirmed as leaders of Group G, securing qualification with a game still to play. The Desert Foxes are set to make their return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2014, when their journey ended in the last 16 against Germany, who went on to win the tournament.

This achievement highlights Algeria’s continued dominance in the region and strengthens their reputation as one of Africa’s top footballing nations.

Unusual venue for Somalia’s “home” match

Although Somalia was nominally the home side, the match took place in the Algerian coastal city of Oran. The Ocean Stars do not currently possess a stadium that meets international standards, necessitating the relocation of their fixture.

Algeria now joins North African neighbors Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt as the continent’s representatives at the 2026 World Cup, which will be held across North and Central America.
