Corinthians forward Memphis Depay drew attention after being seen holding a mobile phone while sitting on the bench in the second half of a Brazilian league fixture against Flamengo, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Television cameras captured the moment, prompting questions about the unusual scene.
The 32-year-old attacker had already left the pitch earlier in the match, having been substituted in the 22nd minute. Despite no longer being involved on the field, his actions on the sidelines quickly became a talking point.
Communication with Dutch medical staff
Depay later addressed the situation, explaining that his use of the phone was strictly for professional reasons. In a message shared on X, he stated that he was in contact with medical personnel from the Netherlands to update them on his physical condition ahead of the upcoming international break.
He emphasized that the communication was necessary and clarified that it had nothing to do with distractions or lack of focus on the match itself.
The forward also noted that he chose to remain near the team to show support, even though he could have stayed in the dressing room due to his injury.
Reaction to result and current situation
Depay admitted he was dissatisfied with the outcome of the game, expressing frustration over the draw. At the same time, he underlined his determination to improve and continue working toward better performances.
The Dutch international, who has earned 108 caps for his country and holds the record for most goals scored for the national team, joined Corinthians in September 2024.
