Danny Welbeck opened his account for Chelsea with a header, helping Xabi Alonso’s men secure a 2-0 victory over Luton Town in the Carabao Cup second round.
The 35-year-old, who joined from Brighton during the summer, found the net shortly after the interval, converting from close range. Hakeem Odoffin then deflected Estevao Willian’s strike into his own net in the 79th minute, sealing the win for the hosts.
Enzo Fernandez was absent from the matchday squad after featuring as a substitute in Monday’s 3-2 Premier League win at Fulham. Reports in Argentina suggested he had asked to be omitted while a move to Manchester City was being explored, though Alonso dismissed that claim.
Fernandez left out by Alonso for cup tie
Alonso insisted the decision to leave Fernandez out was his own, citing the midfielder’s strong professionalism and training attitude. He added that the choice was tactical and that Fernandez could return for Sunday’s clash with Brighton.
Chelsea dominated possession in the first half but found Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley in outstanding form. His best moment arrived in the 11th minute, when he made two quick saves to deny Cole Palmer.
Welbeck also had a header saved, while Keeley stretched to push a Reece James free-kick around the post during a lively opening 20 minutes.
Luton threatened from corners and free-kicks as the half progressed, with Benny Benagr and Odoffin both getting chances, though neither could trouble Chelsea debutant Mike Penders.
Welbeck breaks the deadlock after the break
Chelsea kept pushing before halftime. Estevao dragged a shot wide from inside the box, and Morgan Rogers rattled the crossbar with a volley on his home debut.
Palmer came close again early in the second half, his curling effort clipping the woodwork. Kasey Palmer, facing his former club, also had a sight of goal but fired wide.
Welbeck finally ended Luton’s resistance with a close-range header, putting Chelsea ahead. The League One visitors struggled to create a clear chance to respond.
Odoffin’s own goal in the 79th minute gave Chelsea some comfort and effectively wrapped up the tie.
Keeley continued to impress, saving further attempts from Palmer and Joao Pedro. Substitute Jamie Gittens also hit the post in stoppage time.
Alonso secures first home win in charge
The result marked Alonso’s first competitive victory at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea manager. With no European football this season, the Carabao Cup holds extra significance for the Blues.
The win came shortly after Chelsea agreed a £7.5m fee with Aston Villa for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Asked about earlier statements expressing faith in the current goalkeepers and the subsequent deal for Martinez, Alonso said the club were satisfied with their options but acknowledged that transfer decisions could still be made before the window closes.
Chelsea will next face Premier League side Leeds United at Stamford Bridge in the week starting 7 September.
