Bruno Fernandes injury: what it means for Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes’ most recent fitness setback has come at a difficult time for Manchester United, as the skipper’s value to Michael Carrick’s team means that even a brief spell on the sidelines carries real weight.

Fernandes was named in Portugal’s starting lineup for their 1-0 Nations League victory over Wales on Thursday, but João Neves took his place late in the match. The situation became more apparent ahead of Portugal’s following fixture against Norway, which they won 2-1, when manager Jorge Jesus revealed that Fernandes had been featuring while dealing with discomfort.

The Portugal boss suggested the issue stemmed from a problem Fernandes had originally sustained while representing United, and that he had been coping with it across multiple games. Fernandes was then left out of Portugal’s squad for Sunday’s Nations League clash with Norway as a precautionary measure. The problem is reported not to be especially severe.

As things stand, there is no definitive sign of an extended layoff or a clear timeline for his comeback at United. Portugal manager Jesus is instead focusing on treatment and rehabilitation, with Portugal also scheduled to play Denmark on October 1 and Norway once more on October 4.

That offers United a degree of encouragement, since if Fernandes recovers smoothly, he may be back in Manchester before United’s next Premier League outing against Tottenham on October 10.

Why Fernandes’ absence could be a major problem for United

Should he fail to return in time, though, United will face a far greater challenge than simply filling the gap left by his goals or assists. They will need to establish a different attacking framework to operate with while he is unavailable. Fernandes has already begun the 2026/27 season strongly, registering four goals and one assist in seven appearances across all competitions.

Carrick may be capable of spreading the creative responsibilities effectively, but doing so could alter the midfield balance and limit the team’s capacity to build attacks through its most seasoned playmaker. There is also a mental aspect to a potentially prolonged Fernandes absence.

The former Sporting CP Lisbon player serves as United’s captain and is among those most used to shouldering responsibility when matches turn difficult. Losing him could increase the burden on figures such as Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, and United’s other attacking options to generate and dictate play.

The positive note is that Fernandes’ current absence looks precautionary rather than a sign of something more serious. Carrick, though, should not dismiss the warning and ought to begin preparing before the season gets back underway.
