Arsenal secured a solid 3-0 Champions League win against Lille at the Emirates, as three goals within seven minutes turned a subdued match into an easy triumph for Mikel Arteta’s team.
Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze, and Bukayo Saka each scored during a crucial stretch in the second half, and Arsenal also kept another clean sheet. Still, it took a while for the performance to ignite, as the first hour provided minimal entertainment.
Arsenal battles to build momentum in the opening half
Arsenal came into the game requiring better sharpness in the final third, yet the initial 45 minutes were short on intensity and attacking flair. Timber sent in some encouraging crosses, while Mikel Merino drew a save with a header, and both Myles Lewis-Skelly and Eze challenged Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer.
Lille momentarily seemed to have taken the lead in the 23rd minute, but VAR disallowed the goal for offside. That call kept the score level in a match that otherwise showed few indications of either side seizing control.
Arsenal appeared the more probable scorers, but their superiority did not lead to a goal before the break. The Gunners headed into halftime at 0-0, leaving ample opportunity for improvement after a lackluster first period.
Jurrien Timber opens the scoring for Arsenal
The second half began in much the same way, leading Arteta to ready three substitutions to try to bring fresh energy to his side. Before those changes could take place, though, Timber at last broke through in the 64th minute.
That goal shifted the atmosphere at the Emirates and provided Arsenal with the foundation to assert control. Arteta then brought on Saka, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard, and the home team instantly appeared more threatening.
Eze and Saka confirm the Champions League win
Arsenal required just three additional minutes to extend their lead, with Eze finding the net in the 67th minute after a setup from Saka. The winger then scored himself, making it 3-0 in the 71st minute.
Three goals in seven minutes decided the match and transformed a frustrating night into a dominant Champions League outcome. Arsenal abruptly discovered their flow, performing with increased assurance as Lille found it hard to hit back.
The final phases also included a heartfelt welcome for former Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud when he came on, while youngster Max Dowman made another late showing.
In the end, Arsenal had much to be pleased about: a 3-0 win, three points and a clean sheet. The sluggish beginning might have let down the fans, but the impactful second-half sequence guaranteed Arteta’s team ended the evening well in front.
