San Antonio Spurs forward Tobias Harris is set to sit out the preseason due to a strained left calf sustained during training camp, and it remains unclear whether he will be ready for the beginning of the regular season.
Harris was absent from the team’s yearly Silver & Black intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday. The 6-foot-8 power forward will undergo another evaluation once San Antonio finishes its five-game preseason slate.
The Spurs have stated that Harris is questionable for the regular-season opener against Oklahoma City on Oct. 20. That matchup will be a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals.
Tobias Harris to miss time for Spurs following left calf injury
Harris picked up the left calf strain during training camp, which ruled him out for the preseason. His status will be reviewed again after the Spurs complete their five preseason games.
The injury occurred after Harris signed with San Antonio as a free agent on July 6. The forward agreed to a two-year deal with the Spurs following two seasons with the Detroit Pistons.
His absence from the Silver & Black scrimmage means San Antonio must wait for further assessment before learning whether Harris will be available at the start of the regular season.
San Antonio Spurs wait on Harris ahead of Oklahoma City opener
Harris was a key contributor for Detroit last season, posting averages of 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 27.7 minutes per game. His play helped the Pistons finish atop the Eastern Conference standings.
The Spurs are now monitoring how the left calf injury responds before deciding Harris’ status for the Oct. 20 matchup with Oklahoma City. Team officials have currently listed him as questionable for the regular-season opener.
The game will provide San Antonio with an immediate challenge against Oklahoma City in a rematch of the previous season’s Western Conference Finals, with Harris’ availability still up in the air.
