Victor Wembanyama delivered a remarkable defensive display for San Antonio, setting a new NBA post-season record with 12 blocks, but his extraordinary effort could not stop the Minnesota Timberwolves from securing a dramatic 104-102 victory on Monday.
Despite entering the Western Conference semi-final series as the sixth seed against the second-seeded Spurs, Minnesota stole home-court advantage by taking the opener away from San Antonio. The narrow win handed the Timberwolves a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven match-up.
Wembanyama achieves rare playoff milestone
Alongside his record number of blocks, Wembanyama contributed 11 points and 15 rebounds in an all-around performance that placed him in elite company. He became only the third player since blocks were officially recorded in 1973-74 to register a play-off triple-double that included blocks.
Although his defensive dominance kept San Antonio in contention throughout, the Spurs were unable to close out the contest. After the loss, Wembanyama insisted his team would respond quickly, saying they must improve and solve their issues within 48 hours while expressing full belief in their chances.
Edwards boosts Timberwolves after injury return
Anthony Edwards made his comeback from a knee problem and played an important role from the bench, scoring 18 points to help Minnesota withstand San Antonio’s challenge.
His return provided a timely lift as the Timberwolves held firm in the closing stages to seal a crucial away win. The Spurs will remain on their home floor for Wednesday’s second game as they attempt to level the series.
Knicks overpower 76ers in dominant opener
In the Eastern Conference semi-finals, the New York Knicks opened in emphatic fashion by crushing the Philadelphia 76ers 137-98 at Madison Square Garden.
Third-seeded New York continued its powerful post-season run by becoming the first NBA side to record three consecutive play-off victories by 25 points or more. Jalen Brunson led the way with 35 points, scoring 27 before half-time, while OG Anunoby added 18.
Historic winning streak continues for New York
Following their 140-89 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday, the Knicks also became only the second team in league history to finish one series and begin another with back-to-back wins by at least 30 points.
Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse dismissed the scale of the defeat afterward, stressing that the margin made no difference beyond the 0-1 series deficit. Game two will also take place in New York on Wednesday.
