LeBron James delivered an outstanding performance as the Los Angeles Lakers secured a 101-94 victory over the Houston Rockets, strengthening their position in the opening round of the NBA play-offs. Despite missing key scorers Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves through injury, the veteran forward stepped up with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
Houston welcomed back Kevin Durant after he sat out the series opener, and he finished with a team-best 23 points. However, his impact faded after the interval, managing only three points in the second half while committing nine turnovers during the game.
The win gives the Lakers a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series, with the next two fixtures set to take place on Houston’s home court. James emphasised the team’s mindset, highlighting their determination to match their opponent’s urgency and praising the overall display.
Rockets struggle to respond despite Durant’s return
Durant’s comeback initially provided a boost for Houston, but the team could not maintain momentum after the break. Turnovers proved costly, and their inability to match the Lakers’ intensity ultimately left them chasing the game.
The Rockets now face mounting pressure as the series shifts location, needing strong performances at home to remain competitive. While the margin of defeat was not overwhelming, their second-half struggles underlined the gap they must close.
With the Lakers finding rhythm even without two of their main contributors, Houston will need a more consistent effort across all quarters to avoid falling further behind in the series.
Wembanyama’s injury halts Spurs momentum
Elsewhere, Victor Wembanyama’s night ended early after he suffered a concussion during the San Antonio Spurs’ narrow 106-103 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers. The 7ft 4in Frenchman, who had scored five points, fell face-first to the floor after being knocked off balance while attacking the basket.
San Antonio confirmed he had entered concussion protocol and would not return to the game. Under NBA regulations, he must sit out for at least 24 hours and cannot resume full activity for a minimum of 48 hours.
The Spurs, who finished as the Western Conference’s second seed, have shown resilience without the 22-year-old during the regular season, winning 12 of the 18 games he missed.
Trail Blazers and 76ers level their series
Scoot Henderson led Portland with an impressive 31 points, helping his team even the series at 1-1. With the next two games scheduled on their home floor, the Trail Blazers now have an opportunity to build on that momentum.
In the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia responded strongly after a disappointing opening game, defeating the Boston Celtics 111-97. VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey combined for 59 points, with Edgecombe contributing 30.
Boston saw Jaylen Brown produce a game-high 36 points, while Jayson Tatum added 19 as the only other player in double figures. The series is now tied, with Philadelphia set to host the upcoming games.
