Cavaliers crush Pistons to book first Eastern finals berth since 2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers powered past the Detroit Pistons 125-94 in the decisive seventh game at Little Caesars Arena, completing a dramatic turnaround after dropping the opening two contests of the series. Facing elimination earlier in the matchup, the fourth-seeded Cavaliers responded emphatically by winning four of the next five games to advance.

Cleveland established control quickly, building a 20-point advantage before halftime and never allowing Detroit to recover. Their dominant display on the road sealed a 4-3 series triumph and sent the franchise into the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in eight years.

Balanced scoring drives dominant game seven victory

Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 26 points, while Sam Merrill added 23 and Jarrett Allen matched that total. Evan Mobley also made a major contribution with 21 points as the Cavaliers’ attack overwhelmed the top-seeded Pistons from the start.

Detroit struggled to keep pace throughout the contest, with Daniss Jenkins finishing as the team’s leading scorer on 17 points. The Pistons, despite their impressive 60-22 regular-season record, were unable to handle Cleveland’s intensity in the winner-takes-all showdown.

Mitchell urges improvement despite the milestone

Although Cleveland celebrated a landmark achievement, Mitchell stressed afterward that his team must sharpen its focus moving forward. He acknowledged the accomplishment but warned that relying on desperate situations is not a sustainable path.

“This is fantastic. But we’ve got to be more disciplined,” Mitchell said, adding that the Cavaliers cannot keep waiting until they are pushed to the brink before responding.

Knicks next as finals race narrows

Cleveland’s reward is an Eastern Conference finals meeting with the third-seeded New York Knicks, with the opener set for Wednesday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Detroit’s defeat also extended a long wait, as the Pistons have still not returned to the Eastern Conference finals since 2005. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers or Knicks will eventually meet either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs, whose Western Conference finals series begins Tuesday in Oklahoma.
