Stefon Diggs considers hometown move as Commanders emerge as contender

Free-agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs has acknowledged that joining the Washington Commanders is an option he is seriously considering as he evaluates the next stage of his career. The veteran pass-catcher, who grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, explained that support from local fans has made the prospect of playing close to home increasingly attractive.

Diggs said he became more aware of the strong backing he has in the area after entering free agency. According to the former Patriots receiver, many people have approached him about the possibility of representing Washington, especially when they see him spending time in Maryland, where he has lived for much of his life.

The former University of Maryland standout admitted that the idea of performing in front of the same community that supported him during his younger years carries special significance. While no decision has been made, Diggs indicated that he remains open-minded as discussions continue regarding his future.

Why Washington could be an ideal fit

Washington already possesses a proven top receiving option in Terry McLaurin, but questions remain regarding the supporting cast around quarterback Jayden Daniels. After the organization chose not to sign Deebo Samuel to a long-term deal following his lone season with the team, the Commanders entered the offseason without a clear secondary playmaker in the passing attack.

Diggs could help address that need. Even at this point in his career, he is still regarded as one of the league’s most refined route runners and could provide Daniels with another dependable target capable of creating separation against individual coverage.

The potential partnership with McLaurin is particularly intriguing because of how their strengths complement one another. Opposing defenses already devote considerable attention to McLaurin’s ability to generate big plays downfield, which could create opportunities for Diggs to operate effectively on shorter and intermediate routes.

Veteran production could benefit a developing offense

Washington would not necessarily require Diggs to reproduce the numbers that saw him surpass 1,100 receiving yards in five consecutive seasons between 2019 and 2023 while playing for the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills. Instead, his value could come through consistency, experience, and reliability in key situations.

The Commanders’ receiving group includes Treylon Burks, Dyami Brown, Van Jefferson, and third-round draft selection Antonio Williams from Clemson. Adding a veteran with Diggs’ résumé could provide leadership for a relatively young unit while offering another trusted option in crucial moments.

For a franchise focused on accelerating Daniels’ progress while remaining competitive in the NFC, Diggs represents a potentially valuable addition. The Baltimore Ravens have also been mentioned among the organizations connected to the Maryland native.

Patriots have not completely closed the door

Diggs became available after the New England Patriots released him in March as part of a move designed to create financial flexibility. The decision came while battery charges involving the receiver were pending, though those proceedings later concluded with a not-guilty verdict.

Despite his departure, Diggs remained productive during the previous campaign. He recorded 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns, with three of his five 100-yard performances occurring late in the season. New England went from last place to first in the AFC East before ultimately falling to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel recently stated that a reunion has not been ruled out entirely. While emphasizing that the team is comfortable with its current receiver group following the acquisition of former Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown, Vrabel praised Diggs for his contributions and character.

The coach noted that the veteran helped the Patriots win games and play an important role in their successful season. Although New England is not actively pursuing a return at the moment, Vrabel made it clear that he would not completely dismiss the possibility.
