Jonathan Taylor signs $44M Colts extension

Jonathan Taylor has inked a new deal with the Indianapolis Colts, securing a two-year contract extension with a base value of $44 million. Reports indicate that $39 million of the deal is fully guaranteed, with the potential to reach $47 million through incentives. The Colts made the announcement official on Thursday.

This new agreement elevates Taylor into the upper echelon of running back pay in the NFL. His average annual salary now ranks second only to Atlanta Falcons standout Bijan Robinson, surpassing Philadelphia Eagles rusher Saquon Barkley in the process. Additionally, Taylor’s $39 million in guaranteed money edges out Robinson’s guarantee, establishing a fresh standard for veteran running backs across the league.

New benchmark set for running back compensation

The timing of this extension is notable, coming just days after Bijan Robinson agreed to a contract with a base annual value of $22.75 million, a figure that had recently redefined the market for top-tier ball carriers.

Taylor’s latest deal builds on the three-year, $42 million extension he signed back in 2023. Prior to this new agreement, he was set to play out the final year of that contract.

For the upcoming 2026 season, Taylor was originally slated to earn a base salary of $11.98 million, with a cap hit of $15.562 million for the Colts.

With this extension, Indianapolis secures long-term stability around one of its most pivotal offensive assets.

Taylor’s performance justifies the investment

Taylor once again demonstrated his value with an impressive season, pacing the NFL in both rushing attempts with 323 and rushing touchdowns with 18.

He has also surpassed 1,400 rushing yards and recorded at least 11 touchdowns in each of the last two campaigns, cementing his role as the engine of Indianapolis’ offensive attack.

Now approaching his age-27 season, Taylor continues to be the cornerstone of the Colts’ game plan on offense.

His consistent production was a key factor in the team’s decision to commit substantial resources to him once more.

Colts offense anchored by Jones and Taylor

Indianapolis kicked off last season as one of the league’s most dynamic offenses, topping the scoring charts during the first half of the year with quarterback Daniel Jones at the helm.

The unit’s momentum stalled after Jones suffered a leg injury, and further declined following his Achilles tear. The Colts subsequently turned to Philip Rivers, who was brought in mid-season.

With Jones back to full health for training camp, Indianapolis is aiming to recapture the early-season form from last year, with Taylor expected to play a central role in that resurgence.

Colts solidify their offensive foundation

Beyond Taylor’s extension, the Colts have shown a strong commitment to their offensive roster.

Earlier in the offseason, Daniel Jones inked a two-year, $88 million deal to stay with the franchise.

Wide receiver Alec Pierce also landed a significant contract, agreeing to a four-year deal worth $114 million.

By dedicating substantial financial resources to Jones, Taylor, and Pierce, Indianapolis is clearly banking on this trio to drive the offense for years to come.
