Wild move within one victory of advancing after defeating Stars in Game 5

Kirill Kaprizov delivered a standout performance with one goal and two assists as the Minnesota Wild earned a 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 5 of their Western Conference First Round series at American Airlines Center on Tuesday. With the result, Minnesota now holds a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-7 matchup and can close out the series in Game 6 at home on Thursday.

Wild coach John Hynes praised his team’s structure, emphasizing that Minnesota was at its strongest when operating as a disciplined five-man group. He pointed to the team’s responsibility, defensive awareness, and timely saves as key elements, while also stressing that the focus remains on continuous improvement and preparing for the next challenge one game at a time.

Mats Zuccarello made an immediate impact in his return after missing three games because of an upper-body injury, while Matt Boldy added a goal and an assist. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 20 shots, and although he felt unsettled early, the goaltender said Minnesota’s team play limited Dallas’ opportunities before he found his rhythm in the third period.

Dallas struggles despite flashes of pressure

For the Stars, Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson each produced a goal and an assist, while Jake Oettinger finished with 24 saves. Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan believed his team created some quality opportunities in dangerous areas but noted too many attempts were either blocked or missed entirely, particularly in critical moments.

Heiskanen echoed that concern, identifying Dallas’ inability to generate enough offense at even strength as the primary issue. He said the team must simplify its approach, direct more pucks toward the net, and create chaos around the crease as it heads on the road facing elimination.

Mikko Rantanen also suggested faster puck movement could help Dallas break through, explaining that quicker decisions and more direct shooting might prevent Minnesota from closing lanes so effectively. Captain Jamie Benn maintained confidence, insisting the series remains open and stressing the importance of continuing to fire shots and create rebound chances.

Zuccarello’s return sparks Minnesota early

Minnesota opened the scoring just 3:51 into the first period when Zuccarello capitalized on a Dallas turnover. After Kaprizov recovered his own rebound near the crease, he sent the puck across to Zuccarello, who finished at the back door for a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Brock Faber later highlighted Zuccarello’s importance, noting his skill, leadership, and value on the power play.

Dallas answered on the man advantage at 8:58 when Heiskanen blasted a one-timer from the point past Wallstedt to even the score. The teams remained tight throughout the opening stages, with both sides trading momentum.

Boldy appeared to score late in the first, but Dallas successfully challenged for goaltender interference, wiping the goal off the board. Rather than letting the reversal affect him, Boldy stayed focused and eventually responded in the second period.

Special teams and clutch finishing decide the contest

At 19:28 of the second, Boldy restored Minnesota’s lead with a power-play goal from the top of the right face-off circle after strong puck movement from Kaprizov, Zuccarello, and Quinn Hughes. Boldy said the key was staying composed, returning to effective habits, and winning battles to regain possession.

Michael McCarron gave the Wild breathing room at 7:47 of the third when he took Yakov Trenin’s pass, skated in from the right circle, and beat Oettinger through the five-hole for a 3-1 edge.

Robertson kept Dallas alive by scoring with the extra attacker at 16:39, his shot from a sharp angle deflecting off Jared Spurgeon and into the net. The goal extended Robertson’s scoring streak to all five games in the series and marked his eighth consecutive playoff game with a goal dating back to the 2025 Western Conference Final. Still, Kaprizov sealed the outcome with an empty-netter at 18:00, pushing Minnesota to the brink of advancing.
