Victor Wembanyama came back in emphatic style for San Antonio after missing the previous contest against Portland because of a concussion suffered earlier in the series. Cleared to return on Sunday, the French star delivered an outstanding all-round display with 27 points in a 114-93 road victory that pushed the Spurs into a commanding 3-1 advantage in the best-of-seven match-up.
Alongside his scoring, the NBA defensive player of the year contributed 11 rebounds, seven blocks, and four steals, underlining his huge influence at both ends of the floor. After the game, Wembanyama revealed he had mixed feelings before tip-off, describing a combination of excitement and frustration before channeling those emotions into his performance.
Although pleased to be back, the 22-year-old also expressed dissatisfaction with elements of the league’s concussion process, saying he would wait until after the campaign to discuss specifics. Under NBA rules, players must rest for 48 hours, complete a gradual physical recovery programme and pass daily neurological assessments before both team officials and the league’s concussion director approve their return.
Spurs seize control against Portland
San Antonio’s success was also driven by De’Aaron Fox, who produced a game-high 28 points as the Western Conference’s second seeds moved within one win of progressing. With the series now shifting back to San Antonio on Tuesday, the Spurs have the opportunity to finish off Portland on home court.
Their convincing victory in game four reinforced their control of the contest, especially with Wembanyama back in the line-up after his absence. The Spurs now hold all momentum as they attempt to close out the Trail Blazers in the next meeting.
Rockets extend series against Lakers
Houston avoided elimination by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 115-96, stopping their opponents from completing a clean sweep. Even without Kevin Durant, who missed a third consecutive game because of an ankle injury, the Rockets produced a balanced effort as all five starters scored in double digits.
Amen Thompson led Houston with 23 points, the highest total of the game, helping ensure the series would continue. The Lakers, however, still have the opportunity to secure victory when they return to home court on Tuesday.
Joel Embiid featured for Philadelphia for the first time in the series, but his return was not enough to stop the 76ers suffering a heavy 128-96 defeat against Boston. Payton Pritchard starred from the bench with a play-off career-best 32 points, while Jayson Tatum added 30 points and 11 assists as the Celtics moved 3-1 ahead.
Boston, the second seed in the Eastern Conference, can now wrap up the series on Tuesday in front of their own fans.
In the other Eastern Conference clash, Toronto edged Cleveland 93-89 to level their series at 2-2. Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes each scored 23 points for the Raptors, who held firm at home to ensure the battle continues into game five in Cleveland on Wednesday.
