Real Madrid’s inconsistent run continued as they were held to a frustrating draw against Girona, dealing another setback to their already slim chances of winning La Liga. A victory would have reduced the gap to leaders Barcelona to four points ahead of their upcoming derby, but instead the difference could stretch to nine.
The result extended Madrid’s winless streak to three matches across all competitions, adding further pressure at a crucial stage of the season. With only seven rounds remaining, the title race is increasingly slipping away as Barcelona remain firmly in control.
The atmosphere at the Bernabeu reflected the disappointment, with supporters expressing their frustration at full-time after their side failed to secure all three points in a game they were expected to win.
Second-half goals but no winner
After a quiet first half in which neither side managed to impose themselves, the match came alive following the interval. Federico Valverde opened the scoring six minutes into the second half with a low effort from outside the box that found its way past Paulo Gazzaniga.
However, Girona responded quickly, drawing level just 11 minutes later through Thomas Lemar, who cut in from the right before firing past Andriy Lunin. The equaliser disrupted Madrid’s rhythm and left them searching for a response they ultimately could not produce.
Despite late pressure, including a rejected penalty appeal from Kylian Mbappe, the hosts were unable to find a decisive moment. Star players such as Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham all struggled to make a meaningful impact.
Pressure builds ahead of crucial fixtures
This latest result follows a surprising league defeat to Mallorca and a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa had rotated his squad against Mallorca to prioritise European competition, a decision that backfired, and he opted for a stronger lineup against Girona.
Even with a full-strength team, Madrid lacked sharpness, particularly in the opening period, and were unable to regain control after conceding. The draw leaves them facing mounting challenges both domestically and in Europe.
Attention now turns to their upcoming trip to Germany for the return leg against Bayern Munich, where they must overturn a deficit. Arbeloa, who took charge in January after replacing Xabi Alonso, is under increasing scrutiny following a run that includes three defeats and an unconvincing European campaign.
