Crystal Palace take control of quarter-final with dominant display

Jean-Philippe Mateta marked his return to the starting lineup with his first goal in more than three months, helping Crystal Palace secure a commanding 3-0 victory over Fiorentina in the opening leg of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final. The striker, back in the XI after a collapsed move to AC Milan, calmly converted a 24th-minute penalty after Evann Guessand was brought down by Dodo.

The home side had already shown attacking intent before the opener. Mateta narrowly missed with a header from a Daniel Munoz delivery, while Ismaila Sarr threatened with a curling effort from distance. Moments later, Guessand’s run onto Sarr’s pass ended with a foul inside the area, leaving the referee with a straightforward decision.

Mateta stepped up and sent David de Gea the wrong way to open the scoring, celebrating emphatically. The goal lifted Palace, who looked sharper and more purposeful than in previous outings, setting the stage for a dominant first-half display.

Palace capitalize on momentum before and after the break

The hosts doubled their advantage seven minutes later following a swift attacking move. Daichi Kamada picked out Munoz with a precise pass behind the defence, and although Mateta’s close-range attempt was saved, Tyrick Mitchell reacted quickly to convert the rebound.

Fiorentina appeared unsettled and struggled to cope with Palace’s intensity. However, after the interval, the visitors responded with greater urgency. Giovanni Fabbian struck the crossbar, while Dean Henderson was called into action to deny both Albert Gudmundsson and Roberto Piccoli.

Despite that pressure, Palace regained control as the half progressed. Manager Oliver Glasner expressed frustration from the touchline during Fiorentina’s spell, but his side steadied themselves and limited further threats as they looked to protect their lead.

Sarr seals emphatic win as Palace eye history

Any hopes of a comeback were effectively ended in the final minute when Ismaila Sarr headed in a cross from Kamada, with the ball bouncing beyond De Gea into the top corner. The late goal ensured a three-goal cushion heading into the second leg in Florence.

Mateta, who had also scored a midweek hat-trick in a closed-door friendly, spoke of his satisfaction after the match, highlighting the significance of returning to the scoresheet after a long absence. He later acknowledged supporters with a lap of honour, reinforcing his commitment following speculation over his future.

Palace’s performance marked a significant step in their European campaign. Having previously struggled with efficiency in front of goal, they made their chances count on this occasion. Contributions from Munoz and substitute Yeremy Pino added energy and width, helping the team maintain control.

With a semi-final against either Shakhtar Donetsk or AZ Alkmaar awaiting the winner, Palace now stand on the verge of reaching the last four of a major European competition for the first time. Another display of similar quality could take them even further.
