Borussia Dortmund claimed a 2-0 victory over Mainz on Saturday afternoon, marking a new record in the Bundesliga. According to Opta, Niko Kovač’s side have now led at half-time in ten consecutive league matches – the longest such streak in Germany’s top flight.
Daniel Svensson opened the scoring for Dortmund, netting his second Bundesliga goal for the club. The goal came after Mainz’ Paul Nebel struck the post, and Dortmund capitalised on the rebound to launch a counter-attack that ended with Svensson finishing. Karim Adeyemi added a second in the 40th minute, following another swift counter, giving BVB a comfortable lead heading into the break.
A Half-Time dominance record
Dortmund’s half-time lead streak now spans ten Bundesliga fixtures. The team has started ahead in matches against Mainz, Wolfsburg, Heidenheim, Union Berlin, St. Pauli, Holstein Kiel, Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg (again), Hoffenheim, and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
This remarkable consistency at the interval demonstrates the team’s ability to control matches from the outset and maintain pressure on opponents.
Kovač praises team’s performance
After the match, Kovač highlighted the squad’s discipline and organisation throughout the game. “The team played very disciplined and organised for 90 minutes. We scored the goals at the right time and were a bit lucky with the shot that hit the post, which led us to score our first goal right afterwards,” he said.
The Dortmund coach also praised the team for finishing the match strongly on the road. “We didn’t concede anything else – or at least very little. So I’m very happy and proud of the boys that they rewarded themselves with this performance,” Kovač added.
