Bayern edge seven-goal classic to book semi-final clash with PSG

Bayern Munich secured a place in the Champions League semi-finals after prevailing in a dramatic, high-scoring encounter against Real Madrid, overcoming the Spanish side 4-3 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate. The match began at a relentless pace, producing five goals before the interval in an electrifying display from both teams.

Real wasted no time responding to their first-leg deficit, drawing level on aggregate inside 35 seconds when Arda Guler capitalised on a misplaced clearance from Manuel Neuer and fired into an unguarded net from distance. Bayern quickly answered, with Aleksandar Pavlovic heading in from close range after meeting Joshua Kimmich’s corner, restoring the hosts’ advantage.

The intensity remained high as Real regained the lead midway through the half. Guler struck again, this time from a free-kick that slipped past Neuer despite the goalkeeper’s attempt to recover. It marked the Turkish midfielder’s first Champions League goals, adding further intrigue to an already chaotic contest.

Before the break, both sides continued to trade blows. Harry Kane calmly finished to level the score before Kylian Mbappe drove home from close range after being set up by Vinicius Jr. The French forward’s strike ensured the tie was once again balanced heading into the second half.

Tension rises as match slows after the break

After such a frenetic opening period, the game inevitably settled into a more measured rhythm following the restart. Both teams tightened defensively, reducing the space and tempo that had defined the earlier stages, with neither side willing to overcommit.

Despite the more cautious approach, the tension remained high as the match edged towards a potential extra-time scenario. Real, having led on three separate occasions during the night, continued to push forward but found it increasingly difficult to break through Bayern’s structure.

A decisive moment arrived late on when Eduardo Camavinga, introduced in the second half, received a second yellow card. His dismissal came after delaying a free-kick following a foul on Kane, leaving Real to see out the closing minutes with ten men.

The numerical disadvantage proved costly, as Bayern seized control in the final stages. With Real unsettled, the German side pressed forward in search of a winner, shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.

Late goals seal victory and spark controversy

With time running out, Bayern found the breakthrough. Luis Diaz combined neatly with Jamal Musiala before curling a shot into the top corner, aided slightly by a deflection. The goal, his 24th of the season, ultimately decided the tie and sent the home crowd into celebration.

Real’s resistance faded further in stoppage time when Michael Olise added another, bending in a fourth goal to ensure Bayern’s progression and cap off a memorable night. The late strikes eliminated any chance of a comeback and confirmed the Bundesliga side’s place in the last four.

Frustration boiled over after the final whistle, with tensions spilling onto the sidelines. Guler, who had already been substituted, was shown a red card following an altercation involving referee Slavko Vincic, adding a sour ending for the Spanish club.

For Bayern, the victory keeps alive hopes of a treble this season. Having lost only once since November and boasting a prolific Kane with 50 goals in 42 appearances, they now turn their attention to a semi-final meeting with Paris St-Germain, as well as key fixtures in domestic competitions.
