Liverpool prospect Josh Abe will miss the rest of the campaign after sustaining a significant injury while representing England at youth level. The 15-year-old wide player encountered the problem during a recent England Under-16 tournament held in Antalya, Turkey, which featured fixtures against Denmark, Spain and France.
Abe had found the net against Denmark earlier in the competition. However, during Thursday’s 2-1 loss to France, he appeared to damage his left knee after landing awkwardly in a challenge. Although he initially continued for around 15 minutes, he was eventually forced to leave the pitch.
Message and next steps
Over the weekend, the teenager confirmed on Instagram that his season has been brought to an early close. In his post, he acknowledged the disappointment of the setback but expressed acceptance of the situation.
He will now head back to Liverpool for further evaluation before beginning a rehabilitation programme designed to aid his recovery.
Breakthrough year at youth level
Despite his young age, Abe has enjoyed an outstanding spell with Liverpool’s Under-18 side. He has registered eight goals in 10 appearances in the U18 Premier League North, including a three-goal performance against Leeds United in his most recent outing. He also became the youngest individual to feature for Liverpool in the UEFA Youth League.
His performances have attracted attention from several clubs, among them Manchester City and Chelsea. The winger recently toured Real Madrid’s training complex after joining Tyler Alexander-Arnold’s PLG Agency. Liverpool are determined to retain him and have already proposed a scholarship, while he was invited to train with Arne Slot’s senior squad last month.
