Joao Pedro hat-trick sparks Chelsea comeback to crush Aston Villa

Chelsea strengthened their push for a Champions League place with a convincing victory at Aston Villa, inspired by a hat-trick from Joao Pedro. The striker raised his season tally to 17 goals, while Cole Palmer also found the net as the visitors overturned an early deficit at Villa Park.

Villa had started brightly and took the lead after only two minutes. Leon Bailey delivered a low ball into the area which Douglas Luiz cleverly flicked home from close range, scoring his first goal in more than two years.

Chelsea quickly began to apply pressure in response. Emiliano Martinez denied both Joao Pedro and Palmer, and Reece James appealed for a penalty after going down under Ian Maatsen’s challenge, though the referee waved play on.

The visitors eventually equalised when Malo Gusto’s pass reached Joao Pedro at the far post, allowing him to finish from close range after finding space away from Ezri Konsa.

Chelsea continued to threaten and thought they had been punished when Ollie Watkins ran through on goal and beat Filip Jorgensen. However, the goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee for a marginal offside.

Joao Pedro takes control before and after the break

Chelsea completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time. Enzo Fernandez slipped a delicate pass into the path of Joao Pedro, who calmly lifted the ball over Martinez. The striker was judged to be just onside after another VAR check.

The visitors carried that momentum into the second half and extended their advantage 10 minutes after the restart when Cole Palmer added a third goal for the Blues.

Joao Pedro later completed his hat-trick in the 71st minute after Alejandro Garnacho broke through Villa’s defensive line and set him up for a simple finish.

The Brazilian nearly added an even more spectacular effort moments later when he attempted an overhead kick that drifted narrowly wide.

The win lifted Chelsea to fifth place in the Premier League table, just one point behind Aston Villa, who missed the chance to move nine points clear of their rivals.

Villa struggle as home form declines

The defeat was Aston Villa’s heaviest loss at Villa Park in two years and extended a difficult period for Unai Emery’s side.

Although they remain in the top four, Villa have now won only once in their last seven matches in all competitions. During that sequence they were also eliminated from the FA Cup by Newcastle.

Watkins had an opportunity to revive hope when the score was 3-1, rounding goalkeeper Jorgensen but failing to produce a shot, a moment that reflected both his own struggles and the team’s recent dip.

Villa’s home record has also worsened after previously going 12 months without a league defeat at Villa Park until August. They have now lost four of their past seven matches there and needed late goals in that run to draw with Leeds and defeat Brighton.

Supporters began leaving the stadium when Chelsea made it 4-1, and by the final whistle large sections of the ground were empty.

Chelsea striker approaching major milestone

Joao Pedro’s performance highlighted his growing importance for Chelsea. The hat-trick made it nine goals in nine matches and moved him closer to the 20-goal mark for the season.

His movement, particularly when slipping away from Konsa to score the equaliser, and his composed finish before half-time demonstrated the range of his attacking qualities.

With 14 Premier League goals this campaign, only Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo and Brentford’s Igor Thiago have scored more. He has also contributed seven assists.

Notably, the striker has reached that total without taking penalties, further underlining his impact in open play.

Chelsea have not had a forward reach 20 goals in a season since Diego Costa during the club’s 2016-17 title-winning campaign, although Tammy Abraham came close during his spell at Stamford Bridge.
