Egypt became the 19th nation to clinch a place at the 2026 World Cup after a 3-0 victory over Djibouti on Wednesday. Mohamed Salah scored twice in the match, helping the Pharaohs secure their fourth appearance at the tournament.
In addition to Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco have already confirmed their participation, meaning three African nations are now guaranteed spots. This week, six more places from Africa and two from Asia are expected to be finalized, keeping the focus on these continents.
Meanwhile, no teams from Europe or North and Central America have mathematically secured qualification this month, although several could do so depending on upcoming results.
Europe and the Americas still in contention
England currently holds the strongest position among European sides. A victory over Latvia next Tuesday could guarantee their World Cup participation, provided other group outcomes align favorably.
From the Americas, South American nations already assured of their place include Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia. In North and Central America, hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States automatically qualified, eliminating the need for them to compete for a spot.
Confirmed teams and first-time qualifiers
Asia has seen Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, and Uzbekistan secure their places. Notably, Jordan and Uzbekistan will make their World Cup debuts in 2026.
Oceania’s lone direct qualification was taken by New Zealand. Meanwhile, Bolivia and New Caledonia have not yet qualified outright but are among six nations confirmed for the inter-confederation play-offs scheduled for March 2026.
The expanding field for the 2026 tournament ensures that a number of decisive qualification matches remain, particularly in Africa and Asia, where several final spots are still to be claimed.
