Chivu defends Inter despite European elimination

Inter coach Cristian Chivu rejected what he described as an inaccurate portrayal of his team following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Genoa in Serie A.

The win arrived just days after Inter’s exit from the UEFA Champions League, where they were knocked out in the play-off round by Bodo/Glimt. Back on domestic duty, however, the Nerazzurri secured three points that moved them 13 clear of second-placed Milan, who were set to face Cremonese on Sunday.

Title race in sight despite European setback

Inter are now overwhelming favourites to lift the league crown at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Should they remain at the summit, it would mark a third Scudetto in six seasons for the club.

For Chivu, it would also represent a first domestic championship in his debut full campaign as a senior head coach. The Romanian used the post-match press conference to underline the broader context of the club’s recent achievements, despite the disappointment suffered in Europe earlier in the week.

“Narrative has nothing to do with reality”

In a prior television appearance, Chivu suggested that at Inter, certain observers believe that “whatever you do is never enough.” Asked to clarify those remarks after the Genoa game, he insisted that the perception being created does not reflect the facts.

“This is a narrative that has nothing to do with reality,” he said. “Recognition is not given for what this group has achieved over the past four or five years. Nothing ever seems to be satisfactory, but we are accustomed to that and continue to push ahead. Our aim is to compete on every front.”

Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Inter have claimed two league titles and are on track for another, in addition to two Coppa Italia trophies, two Supercoppa Italiana triumphs and two appearances in Champions League finals.
